So what is everyone using and having good results with? I have tried 55gr M193 and also American Eagle 45gr varmint loads. I have been getting good shot placements/lung shots. Average 200-300 yard shots. But not getting instant knock downs. Have been thru n thru shots. I do have more loads to try, including 69-77gr match loads SMK & other hollow points. Shot one this am, 250yds, 15 mph left to right wind and snowing pretty good. Using the AE 45gr varmint tipped. May just need to start taking head shots!

What length barrel and what twist?

Also, if you care about pelts...the open tips are going to do more damage.  If you just want them to die faster, OTM expands better.

My Ruger American is 22” w/ 1:8 and also will start using my MK12 ModH 16” w/ 1:8. I have no use for the pelts and my nephew and his friends are out of that hobby right now.

I don’t hunt coyotes but 50gr Hornady V-Max is supposed to be one of the best rounds if I recall correctly. That’s what I use for target practice since it evaporates on impact. That’s also why it is supposed to be so good for coyotes, it goes in one side, and doesn’t come out the other, so less fur is damaged.

In for the info, recently bought a RRA Coyote rifle 20" and I am in the process of scoping it and picking up some ammo hear and there.

Some kind of soft point that works at that distance. Will depend on barrel twist rate but something starting around 65gr Sierra game kings. Hornady soft point boat tails...

Nmnd....see the specs now... You would be good with what I recommended. All the way up to 77 gr pills.

I bet those 45gr bullets are slowing down too much to fragment as intended at that range.

Maybe if you stepped up to a 24 or 26" you could get them or ball to have some more ass at that range and actually do something.

22-250?

Gold dot?

Fusion?

I think a SMK or the like will come out tumbling or ice pick.

Only shot 3 this winter with AR, all three of those with Australian Outback 55 gr sierra blitzkings.  1/9 twist 16" barreled AR, 1-4 power scope.  two were shots to the front chest/neck, the other was a runner, had to put 3 into him to roll him.   The frontal shots had no exit damage.

Shot placement has more to do with it than the round you use. Ive had coyotes get up and take off after getting hit with 168gr bthp and Ive dropped ones will ball. A good dog will help you recover wounded ones as well. I do have some 69gr blackhills hp that I have been meaning to sight in.

Hornady 55gr TAP put this one down last week.  75 yards at night with my SBR. Very accurate in my gun

Do you decoy with your dog or just use for recovery?

I like the 60gr VMax, in my case handloads over H335.

I'm using the 60 gr Vmaxs as well over 23.6 grains of WC844 (aka H335) in my Ruger American Predator rifle.  Some of the best shooting I've ever done in my life.

Haven't had a chance to use it on a coyote yet, though.

How does the 60 gr Vmax perform on coyote?  There's a thread over on the Predator forums with not a lot of good to say about the Vmax.

Well I’m not a hide hunter just a fawn and calf protector so I don’t care about hide damage. All I know is that it puts them down. The 60 Vmax in my experience can cause you some problems if you’re a hide hunter.

I like the 60gr Vmax for coyotes. No .223 bullet I have found will give you 100% dead in their tracks performance.

I'm working up a load with a 55gr VMAX; hoping to use it on my first coyote hunt.

I've used the 55gr Vmax to good effect from the 223.  I've also used the 55gr Sierra Blitz King with good results.  I've tried the 69gr SMK but have had differing results.  I Have a box of the 60gr Vmax sitting on the shelf but haven't tried them in the AR.  I have been using 75gr Vmax out of my 1:8 twist 220 Swift for awhile now.  It makes a loud THWACK and then the dog drops in his tracks and that's that.  Not good on the pelts but there is no market for them and no bounty around here.

@1ADMP, how do you find out if there is a bounty in your/my area?  Other than calling my local GW, I have no idea where I'd start.

Thanks,

I use a basic Hornady 55 grain SP on a few critters to good effect. It’s nothing special but it gets the job done from 0-300 yards.

I did get a 22-250 just for fun on the plains, I shoot the 50 grain Vmax Superformance. When you hit prairie dogs it looks like Gallagher used his watermelon hammer on them.

Just after-action and recovery (if needed).  He's so gun shy I cant take him with me hunting anymore, even though I shoot suppressed.  Thunderstorms drive him into crazy land...

Still using 55TAP Urban Hornady.  That load might be restricted to LE only though.  I think the "urban" designation is supposed to mean it holds together better but thats just a guess.

If I was to change, I'd go with a 60gr VMAX probably.

The county that my friend used to live in paid a bounty of $25 per pair of ears.  I believe the county and all the sheep ranchers in the area put out the bounty.  We hit them hard for the first month or so until the word got out that people were getting paid to kill coyotes.  Once that happened you were practically tripping over people trying to walk into a set up.

I have a bunch I need to load up in my .22-250.  I believe this is the heaviest true varmint bullet.

I've been using 70 grain TSX because that's what I use for deer, my rifle is zeroed for that load and shoots it well, and it keeps me from having to stock another load. It's dropped a few coyotes and a bobcat dead in their tracks, along with some racoons, but I'm typically shooting at under 100 yards.

Not a "stop in their tracks" but, I've used Federal 64 gr. JSP with great success. With decent shot placement, usually a flinch, a few steps, and a puddle of blood.

These two coyotes that were shot with 5.56mm ball ammo at approx 80 yards .

Not 200 yards but 80 yards with 5.56 mm 55 grain Military ball these two coyotes were destroyed.
