Eventually I might get mine out of the box and learn a thing or two.

Quoted://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/CableGuide:

Cables based on the FTDI USB chip are recommended. FTDI makes a high quality USB to serial chip that has a good, working driver built in to many operating systems. The FTDI chip can add $10-15 to the cost of a USB programming cable, but will save time and frustration with driver issues.

Saves lots of headaches with the ChiCom cables, order one from BlueMax49ers on eBay.

On the ChiCom cables they sometimes use fake Prolific PL-2303 USB chip.

Bill

Get your Amateur License so you can do a lot more with the Baofeng, and it is not that tough.

The cheap cables work fine under Linux, at least IME.

Not a Linux user, I wouldn't know.

Definitely not on Win 8 or 10, which I have tried on!

OP, do some learning and get licensed, the radio will be WAY more useful to you once you take those two steps.
