I stopped hunting 13 years ago when my son was born. Stayed in the bottoms duck hunting, deer hunting and turkey hunting. Now I have a chance to get in a deer lease with a friend. Will be hunting out of box blinds over food plots. Around 400 acres of fields and woods. I sold off most of my hunting rifles and good glass. So, now I need a decent budget scope for a Savage .308. Trying to get my 13 year old interested in hunting.

So what is a good option in the $200-300 range.

Thanks for the help.

Most here would probably suggest upping your budget and I'd agree.  That said, I'd say Vortex.  It's the popular budget option these days. Their Diamondback, Sonora, Copperhead, and Crossfire series all fall into that price range.

Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 is what I'm rocking on my primary rifle right now. It's fairly clear, seems to gather light decent, and the biggest testament is I haven't broken it...Yet.

A basic 3-9 with a 1" tube will do just fine for food plot hunting. Be sure to buy quality rings, too. I'm partial to Talley's aluminum rings for low-round count hunting applications. The link above is for a model-25.

If you find yourself moving to the woods, I'd recommend moving up to a 30mm tube for light collection. I wouldn't worry about BDC or MIL reticles hunting on 400 acres.

Burris Fullfield II or Leupold VX over Vortex budget line in my opinion. The FullField 4.5x14 is a nice scope for the $ and is on sale for $167 on Amazon right now.

Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16.  A little more than you need for food plot hunting, but it gives the gun a chance to stretch out a little at the range as well.

I was going to say a Leupold VX-II but they may have been discontinued.

Midway has a Vortex 4-16x42 on sale right now for $199...pretty solid scope...great scope for that price.

I think 4-16 is too much for hunting really.  A 2-7,  3-9, or 3.5-10 are better options for hunting specifically, however, I've shot a fixed 4x scope for a long time and I've never felt the need for more while hunting, but shooting on the bench it's really nice to be able to dial up more magnification.  So I think it's a solid compromise.

I’m happier with the low-end to mid range Leupolds than Vortex, particularly for hunting. Even in that budget, you should be getting better glass and lighter weight. IMO, you don’t need any bells and whistles for a daytime scope at reasonable ranges.

OP, what terrain surrounds said food plots? How big is the actual plot? 400ac of cut corn is a lot different than 400ac of pine and different from oak as well. What distance do you realistically expect to engage a deer?

Around here, a woods hunter isn’t shooting more than 50yds, really more like 50ft, but possibly 100yds. Hunting fields the distance is potentially limitless, but most are maybe 400yds across.

Thanks for the replies. Shots would be anywhere from 20 yards to 300 down a shooting lane.

Leupold. Probably going to have a duplex, so 200yd zero, aim mid to high behind the shoulder at 100, and at spine at 300. Wouldn’t worry about any mild breeze until near 300. Bullet will fall into the boiler.

Plug your details into a good ballistics calc to be sure, especially wind values.

I just put a Leupold VX Freedom on my Muzzleloader.  It has very good glass and light transmission.

I would be using 168 or 175 gr ammo. Really need to get off my ass and get a scope. I am still trying to figure out a better mag for the Savage 10-FCP. The options are confusing.
