I normally use a .308 AR-10 to hunt hogs, and I've been real happy with it. I'd like to try out my .44 magnum Ruger (carbine). Has anyone used that cartridge?  The .308 drops them dead in their tracks, never had one run any distance. Will the .44 do the same. Would only like opinions from people who have actually used a .44 mag on hogs.

Shot one between the eyes at 20 yards with soft points. Dropped immediately then got up and ran off after 5 seconds. Winchester 94 in 44 magnum.

Just out of idle curiosity, has anyone tried copper hollow points?

it will work great if you use the right bullet.  If you use a common JHP like for self defense made for pistol velocities it may very well blow up on impact at the rifle velocities.

What you want is a good jacketed softpoint and bonded if you can find it. You need penetration and lots of it for hogs.

The "standard" .44 mag available everywhere is a jacketed soft-point. That's what I use.

Wife and I are going to try out 4 Amigos Ranch in Eagle Pass, TX.  We've seen some good and some bad reviews. We did Ranger Creek Ranch last year in Seymour, TX and it was great in every way. We each bagged a 250 lb. boar. They actually tasted quite good. The guide/skinner told us that if they don't smell bad on the outside then the meat is generally good. We used a .308 (Ruger SR-762) with Trijicon thermal scope.

That guy knew what he was doing. Ignore people who tell you "any hog over ### pounds is gonna taste like shit."  Those people are wrong.

Can't help with 44Mag but my 357 Mag works real good.

I’ve shot a few, with a Rossi 92 Trapper. Listen to the bullet warnings, XTP bullets at rifle velocities are a no go, I’ve had good luck with WWB  240 JSP and American Eagle 240 JHP. Best results were with Hornady 265 JSP in my handloads.

I haven’t had a  .44mag carbine in years. But when I did I used the Remington 265 gr soft points. I think I killed two pigs with it. Not enough to really make a detailed answer but at close range it was pretty darn good tool. I don’t think it dropped them as fast as the .308. But it was a Hell of a lot lighter and didn’t kick as hard and seemed to point really well. I miss the little Ruger carbine.
