The contest is this weekend, but there are a lot of DX stations on the air warming up, right now.  It's a good time to pickup some DX  contacts.

That's my favorite contest.  Unfortunately I signed up for overtime this weekend.  Hopefully I can play for a bit in the evenings.

I hope the propagation picks up this weekend. Been crappy all week. I've tried to work Palestine on CW for days now, no joy. Signal just too weak. Last night I had a pretty good copy on 40m but the OP just kept calling CQ without listening for an answer. He calls CQ then 2 seconds later he calls CQ again. Did that for an hour straight. People spotting them were frustrated & posting WTF!?  I gave up.

I resorted to working them on FT8.

Not much going on on 20 right now. I did work one station in Cuba and another in Venezuela.

Sounds like the Commies are warming up.

20 is W-I-D-E open right now (1500Z), and 15 is showing a little activity!

It's great how the bands always open up for a major contest.

75 watts & a dipole are rompin' & stompin' into Europe on 20 this morning.

The band scope is full again this morning, but I'm only hearing the US side of the QSO.  Most of the signals coming out of Europe are just too weak to work.

First foray into CW DX.

Since I'm new to throwing code, I'm nervous about being 'that guy' who sends at 23wpm when these stations are hauling along at 40...

Still, I put a ~bunch~ of new DX in the log. Hell, they're all new on CW. Hah!

Lots on strong DX stations on both 40 and 20 meters, even some on 15 meters. I've been casually digging out DX. All answered on the first try, with only 100 watts.

Some really nice Japanese stations booming into the east coast right now on 20.  Neat.
Good fun!

I listened a lot more than I operated.  Made about 20 QSOs.  All of them were in the Caribbean and Central/South America, except for one QSO with Hawaii.  No ATNOs. Never did hear Europe well enough to work anyone.

I couldn't hit SA, all of mine were in Europe. Slovenia had a lot of stations on the air.

I'm not sure why, but South America, and the Caribbean have always been my strongest direction.  I heard many stations in South America, and even made contact with one in Argentina (5000+ miles).  Europe has never been that strong for me, especially now, at the bottom of the cycle.

Print a great circle map of the world centered on your QTH, draw a line corresponding to the direction of your antenna wire, and sketch in the lobes.
GC map plotter: https://ns6t.net/azimuth/azimuth.html?

My dipole runs northwest and southeast, which means the lobes are oriented northeast and southwest. That puts most of Europe and Africa in the lobes and SA and Japan in the nulls.

However, working grayline, I can get many of the otherwise nulled countries.

That's a cool map!

My dipole runs directly North-South, which puts one lobe pointed straight at Hawaii, and the other at Cape Verde.  This make sense, and I actually do pretty well over in the Pacific Islands, when the propagation is good.  The Caribbean kind of makes sense too, as it's probably on the edge of the lobe, and not too far away.  Parts of South America seem reasonable, but Deep South America looks to be a little too far out of the picture.  I think Europe is mostly within the lobe, but it is actually farther away than Hawaii.  Hitting Alaska is just pretty darn lucky.
