Any tips on a home brew antenna for a 2m Yagi so one of my students can make something which will allow him to hit a repeater about 17mi from his home? It's pretty flat where we're at, but there is definitely a dip in his hood vs the dead flat portion I'm in. I have successfully hit a repeater ~15mi from my home with the Nagoya antenna on my UV-5RE, so I'm guessing it won't take much for him to get to the closest repeater to him.

I have access to ~2" dia. 4' fiberglass pole sections which slip fit together. Should I just get some 1/4" round stock and call it good there? This will be my first build, so any and all advice is appreciated.

Note that this will be as much for education as anything, but I would love to build something that will work. Furthermore, upgrading radios or anything costing too terribly much will be out since we're on a tight budget with this project.

Building a 2m yagi is pretty straightforward thing. Lots of potential things to alter and adjust. I think the most critical thing is finding a design & determining how you are  going to make the matching section. Then just build the antenna. Easy to get bogged down in minutia - spacing reflectors another 5% away, etc.

Yep!  There are a lot of designs, I've made this one and it works quite well.  I've made satellite contacts on SO-50 with it and a 5W HT.

Yagis are cool, but I would contribute that, my experience with a dual band rollup slimjim from N9TAX very much extended the rangr of my hts.

40-50 miles to a repeater from a valley is totally doable.  Not expensive at all, around 30 bucks shipped.

Not to rob you of the build experience, but it's good kit.

Even a 3 element yagi is going to have a lot more gain than the best J-pole, and J-poles are about the easiest home build there is

Build both and compare

OK. I'm sold on the tape measure deal. Can anyone give a link to some fittings and some coax for that part of this? I'm not very familiar with the connectors and proper coax for these things, although I do have a lot of experience with crimping and soldering otherwise.

Yeah, directionally.

I built one of these a few months back.

It works and is very small and very portable.

OP is looking to hit a specific repeater 17 miles away.  Direction is what he is looking for.

I built one following this guy. Works great and I have talked to repeaters at least 18 miles away on 5w.

Well, about 30min from start to finish later, we had an antenna built. It worked as advertised and I was able to hear my student on the repeater from his house. He was coming in just fine. Thanks for all the help with this guys. We're both pumped.

I built a KB9VBR tape measure yagi last night for my Baofeng. Works well. Haven't tested the distance, but it's flat around here so kinda hard to do so.

Good test would.be to see if you can get into a satellite (or ISS repeater) with it.

Yeah that's true. I built it for the ISS. Is it the same process for a satellite? Just wait till it's passing over me?

Yep.  Look up the ones that are FM mode, they're basically cross-band repeaters that listen on VHF and transmit on UHF, or vice-versa.

I've worked people on SO-50 several times with the tape measure 2M Yagi, that sat. has the uplink freq. on 2-meters, so it works out well as it can hear the UHF downlink just fine.  If you have a true dual-band beam, you can work them all pretty easy.

This site tracks which birds people are working recently, and gives details on each.  There are nice phone apps that can track when you'll have pass overs in your area as well.  https://www.amsat.org/status/

This one isn't dual band. I mean it'll work on 440. The SWRs hover around 2:1.

I'll find one that's 2m up and 440 down. That'll be neat.

Thank goodness this antenna is doing so well. He checked into a net tonight and we unsuccessfully attempted to do a simplex contact. I'm thinking he wasn't accurate enough in directing his antenna toward my house, but we'll give it a go again tomorrow.
