Any tips on a home brew antenna for a 2m Yagi so one of my students can make something which will allow him to hit a repeater about 17mi from his home? It's pretty flat where we're at, but there is definitely a dip in his hood vs the dead flat portion I'm in. I have successfully hit a repeater ~15mi from my home with the Nagoya antenna on my UV-5RE, so I'm guessing it won't take much for him to get to the closest repeater to him.
I have access to ~2" dia. 4' fiberglass pole sections which slip fit together. Should I just get some 1/4" round stock and call it good there? This will be my first build, so any and all advice is appreciated.
Note that this will be as much for education as anything, but I would love to build something that will work. Furthermore, upgrading radios or anything costing too terribly much will be out since we're on a tight budget with this project.
