Do you ever eat them? I've been told they are not too bad.

My dog will eat the better part of a whole groundhog if given the opportunity. Must enjoy it.
Just gut it first. |

I know the photo is close, but there is extensive damage to that concrete from the woodchucks burrowing under it.

I'm still waiting to even see one.

|
|
[#13]
I saw one a few days ago and staked the hole out for a while this afternoon but didn’t see him. Maybe tomorrow.
|
|
|
[#14]
I had a family of chucks under the concrete of my barn when I moved to my place 7 years ago. I made it a top priority to get rid of them. Rifle took care of the adults, conibear traps took care of the pups after they scattered to various places. I haven't seen a single groundhog since then thankfully. It appears I took out the breeding population.

I have that same rifle that I shot a groundhog with once. It was burrowing under my barn, and I desperately wanted to get him. If I saw him and was without a gun, he would just mosey back to the barn. If I had the rifle, he would sprint, like he knew what was up.
So, finally I decided to wait from a second floor window and finally got a shot. I dropped him in his tracks. I decided that because I was on the second floor and needed to walk down the stairs and back around to where he was, I would shoot it again to be sure. When I hit it, the fucker popped straight up in the air and made a beeline back to his hole and disappeared down under the barn. I never saw it again, so in the end, he actually did me a favor of burying himself. |

I missed one yesterday. Hit the dirt right under him. As we had our Easter yesterday, I'm going back to stake out his hole today.

I saw a good size one yesterday morning while I was walking home from turkey hunting,I was tempted but I couldn’t bring myself to use a $11.00 TSS shell on him.

Subscribed. Just built a 6 creed and looking forward to getting after the groundhogs. Soon as this knee replacement heals up enough to get out I plan on getting after them (been trying to convince the wife to roll me out Hannibal Lecter style, hasn't worked yet)

Well haven't made it out here in PA yet.
Just broke in the barrel on my new 6creed build before I had my knee replaced Apr12. Finally ventured out today to fine tune zero and break my cabin fever. Well right at the end of my last group this guy walked out of the long grass and stood up at 40yards, so i had a 4 shot group instead of 5, and first blood for the new rifle. With the farmers planting right now, I've been taking the .22mag and concentrating around the barns and buildings. |

I am saddened by your plight. Allow me to offer my deepest and sincerest condolence. However, I do not have the Chaplain’s duty and I am short of towels. Please see the Captain of the Head for material for drying your eyes.

It’s nothing but a big chipmunk. My grandparents were Pennsylvania Dutch. They said that the young ones weren't bad to eat, but the big ones were really greasy, chewy, and gamey. Best for stew. After years of hunting groundhogs every spare minute, I haven't been out groundhogging at all the last few years, been out fishing all the time! We have a family of em in the backyard and my kiddos have taken a liking to them. Interestingly they share the same den area as some red foxes. |
