That's pretty cool; great piece of history.  Those old strobes still work if you can get a CR123 adapter....both of mine are still functional.

I've longed for details about that leg holster since seeing it in The Glorious Reference Manual ©™®, United States Combat Aircrew Survival Equipment World War II to the Present: A Reference Guide for Collectors

TAG for when I have 40 minutes to watch this.

I am curious about how many pilots actually carried these?

I’ve read that about 100 were made as a development test but pilots found it got in the way in the cockpit and flopped around too much when walking, and especially when running.

I have temp access to old strobes, but lack the batts.  Info on the 123 batt adaptor would be extremely useful.  time-essential.

@raf

That's it, thanks danpass.  Works like a charm with CR123 batteries and extends the usable life of these strobes.

Very interesting video, thanks.
I didn't expect nearly that much stuff to come out of there. Every essential is covered.
A priority you don't see much today is avoiding infection. That kit had two different anti-bacterial creams, antibiotics, insect repellent, malaria pills, etc. Guessing that came from some hard lessons learned?

Greetings all - I just stumbled upon this page and realize i am very late to the conversation - however I thought some of you might like to know my friend wrote a book on this survival kit back in June 2016 (the print version he put together in May 2017).

It is available in either print form (on Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble) and also as an ebook on Kindle.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1546790438  *

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/survival-kit-individual-lightweight-army-leg-holster-james-a-b-mahaffey-jr/1126440646  *

*  Same price for both print versions - $25.95

and the ebook is $9.99 - https://www.amazon.com/Survival-Kit-Individual-Lightweight-Holster-ebook/dp/B01H9LU67E

He has been collecting US Military survival kits and gear since he was 9 years old.  He even includes scans of the first "Organizational and DS Maintenance Manual for Army Survival Kits - TM 55-8465-206-13.

Cheers,
