I hooked up an attic antenna to my SDR this afternoon just to have something to RX with and went up the bands on the FT8 frequencies and surprisingly found decent activity on all of them. 12m of all things seemed particularly good, but 10m was active also.

Yep, saw some secure mil stuff on 32.7 and quite a few FM 10M repeaters were coming in there for a while.

I looked for some 29mhz FM and didn't hear anything

set the 590 to scan 28.400-28.600 and worked a bunch of FL, a VA, and an NC

One of the FL guys was taking check ins for a local net, but was happy to check in E-skip guys like me.

I know what ya mean.

For some reason I’m really attracted to green radios myself. Keep considering getting one but the 6M variants that are cost effective and plentiful just don’t really make sense. Then the Clansman 320 that makes me the most sense seems to be hard to find outside of eBay and UK sellers. And I’m not a electrical tinkerer type guy so I tell myself it maybe best to just skip the whole idea and save me some grief.

Yea I'm partial to the modern stuff so it costs a fortune. I bought multiples when I could just due to repair issues. I can throw one out and fire up another. Plus modem stuff gives you normal 5k 6.5,k freq options.

I was going to work on my cabinets on Friday when I heard a N5S** in Texas work a Georgia station on 29.600 FM. The N5 was full quieting in upper SC. Then I heard a repeater on 29.660 ID on CW but didn't catch the call sign. Presumably it was the Dallas Fort Worth repeater. The last time I had a 10 meter FM rig was 40 years ago and I never heard any transmissions on it. So I had bought the TYT9800 for the local 6 meter repeater and only had a 56 inch whip on the FJ cruiser for it. Well Darn!

I might have to consider a multiband antenna now.

There are over 2,100 stations showing on 6m FT8, according to the psk reporter map. I jumped on & sent out 4 CQ's around 35W & just one OP in VA 135 Miles away heard me at -12db. I never decoded anyone or saw a trace on the waterfall so I gave up. I did decode some South America & US stations on 10m.

Yesterday on 12m FT8 I also worked Venezuela and Brazil, one was ~7000km away but it faded before we could get rogers in so it doesn't count I don't know if it was E skip or not but it was the furthest I've worked on 12m. 15 was pretty good too.

Made a 6m  FT8 QSO with cuba today from New England with 25 watts on an antenna with an SWR of 9:1

Effective radiated power was 9 watts and he received me at -13db

I had so much RF in the shack I had to stop because the RF was freezing the program

I need to make a 6m dipole, maybe tomorrow

My Field Day dipole is sitting in the storage building, I can measure it later tonight to give you starting dimensions. It's WECSOAR'd out of old TV antenna parts if you'd happen to have that diameter tubing. Actually the longest reflector element on old-school VHF tv antennas is usually about right. About 25 feet up is a good height for E skip takeoff angle. I've made a lot of contacts on a simple resonant dipole on 6 meters that's almost identical to this one.

ETA:
Complete with ugly balun, although I need to redo it with a ferrite sometime.  Elements measure 54 1/2 inches as it was when I tuned it last time it was used. I recently disassembled two old TV antennas and the longest reflector elements are the same length as those lengths that I came up with.

Yep made my first FM 6m contact. About 35-40 miles to Rabun Bald Ga.

Guy in my club suggested to put 6 & 10m FM calling freq in my scanner. Was sitting in the living room and boom he was calling CQ loud and clear! It was pretty cool.

Lots of 6 meter activity this weekend. SSB is 50.125, up to 50.200 or so.  Lot of FT8 activity at 50.313.

What little time I had to get on the air tonight, I discovered my 6m dipole had a broken feedpoint

Got it down off the tower, repaired and new feed installed, but don't feel like climbing the tower to put it back up in the dark. Hopefully will make a few contacts tomorrow.

Worked a bunch of east coast and Canada on 6m last night.

I don't even have a 6m antenna anymore.

Sold my 3 element yagi to LC10311 RIP

Years ago, I worked some 6m on a G5RV.

when I told the other station, he was outraged

"YOU CAN'T WORK SIX METERS ON A G5RV, IT'S NOT MADE FOR THAT !!"

FM or SSB/CW/FT8?

If anyone couldn't make contacts on 6m today, they have problems. Lots of traffic on my RX-only attic antenna/SDR setup.

Mine is that my regular 6m antenna had a failure, I took it down at dusk last night and repaired it with the aim of putting it back up this morning and make some contacts today.

With predictable results.... it rained early this morning. Thankfully the coax was hanging such that the connector was pointing down, but still decided to let it go for a day to make sure it was completely dry before connecting it again. Reinforced by not being able to find the cords I needed to get FT8 working.

Just drove home from visiting family. During the hour drive I made probably half a dozen 6 meter SSB contacts and a 10 FM on 29.6. I'm home now and have the SDR back on using the fast scanner plugin. It's really hopping all the way through 6 meters.

FM. I’m a new tech with a Yaesu VX-8 HT. I know I need a better hard mounted antenna to really be effective. Just gonna take time and money. I even tried my PRC-77 with the long whip...nada.
I’d like to try FT8 but don’t know where to start.

Need an all-mode radio to start with, FT8 encodes onto an SSB signal.

Contest traffic is almost all SSB, FT8 or CW.

10M has been really good here in Ohio the past few days especially.  I've made a couple dozen great FT8 contacts and even scored some new states.  SSB QSOs have been good enough that I've actually heard both sides of some conversations.

10m FT8 was good to me yesterday here in WV.     New 10m DXCC for me was three different JA's, two AK, HI, Wales, Russia, Urkraine and Belarus.

I installed JT Alert a couple of days ago. Fishing with dynamite.  I have started to try and get WAS on all bands.  In the last two days I have gotten 30 different states on 6 and 10m each band.
I needed 14 states for 20m digital. Using JT Alert I got 13 of them the first hour or so. Got number 14 later that day.   I am a LOTW snob.  I have only been working a station if they use LOTW and have updated sort of recently. It's nice so many FT8 users also use LOTW.
