I bought a mossy 500 at a police auction about 30 years ago for $20. It was a real beater at the time. I cut the long 28" barrel down to 20" and used it for years to hunt with and for home protection.  When Ebay popped up, it was easy to find stocks, bbls scope mounts and such at cheap prices.  I got a 18" slug bbl, a 22" multi choke barrel and even a black powder barrel off of ebay cheap. Not to mention stocks and such.  That one gun has killed, game birds, turkeys and deer and sits in my closet with an 18" bbl.  I even carried it in the trunk at times when I was working various security jobs.

It is well worn and beat to shit but still works.  In fact my son killed a deer with it this past fall.

If you shop around you can find some good buys on used shotgons. I have picked up several over the years costing from $125 to $225. The latest project shotgun will be a M37 Ithatica (spelling). None of my shotguns have a barrel longer than 24 inches. A couple are set up as tactical riot guns. Some are just 5 shot with bead sight on the barrel. I think its a must to have at least one in your home for protection. I like a side saddle for a few extra rounds to have with your shotgun. Better to have and not need than to need and not have. I have 3 double barrel, 5 pumps, and 1 auto just to cover all the bases.

my favorite shotgun . a mossberg12 guage 500 with a 20 inch vent rib barrel and accu chokes .
I have used this gun a bunch as you can see the blue wore off the slide and tube area . I thought about getting a specific home defense shotgun but this one just seems to  hit what I point it at .  mr gobbler in the picture caught a head full of number 4 copper coated 3inch mag bbs at 45 yds . when hunting season is over the plug comes out and it rest under the bed . you might consider something like this as it gives you the option to use different chokes for hunting  , it never hurts to have options.

I really liked the thought of that 20" Accu-Choke barrel.  Looks like it could really do everything.

In pump guns I personally prefer the Winchester (FN now) smoother action imo.

Im a 1300 guy myself, turning my slug gun into a hi speed/low drag scattergun at the moment.

I'm curious - why are SHTF rifles autoloaders, but SHTF shotguns are pumps?

If you don't spending a few extra bucks, you could buy a shotgun that was both auto and pump.

I think the "general" thought is autoladers were more prone to malfunctions when it comes to scaterguns.....

I've had a Benelli SBE for around 8 years. It has never hiccoughed once. A number of the estancias in Argentina stock them for high volume dove shoots due to their reliability and ease of cleaning.

It's full of #1 buckshot at the moment in my bedroom.

sorry for the lousy pics, i only have the camera on my cell phone but...

i actully agree with what TJ and JBlitzen both said, the safety arguement isn't really a big deal at all, and it's still easy to manipulate after adding a pistol grip stock. though for a homedefense shotgun, i leave mine loaded but not chambered. it's one step easier than tap, rack, bang, and i never have to worry about forgetting to remove the safety...

i currently have a pair of these(two is 1, and all that), i paid iirc $225 and $245 respectivelly, and i know dealer at the time was $219. the 6pos stocks, stock shell hollders, and light mounts, are ati brand(they're ok but damn sure not knox stock and surefire quality) sidesaddle's are tacstar brand and work very well. i plan to swap out the cheapy garrity brand light for somethinga little better at some point. the sling is idf carbine inspired and made of a u.s.g.i. general purpose strap with the buckles cut off and paracord simple, cheap, and damn rugged...

i also had a 3rd but it was blued, not parkerised like the oneabove, and her twin. i sold it to a friend, he liked the way mine were set up so much that he built the one i sold him just the same. i believe this is a pic of it...

here is a pic of my first mossberg pump, though it usually wore a butler creek metal frame side folding stock and rode in my trunk...

i also sold this one to another friend, it now looks much the same as the 20" 7+1 persuader...

i copied and posted this directly from the mossberg site, don't know if it'll tell you anything you'd like to know or not but here it is and it includes the m.s.r.p.

merlin,

both of mine are tacstar brand, not the highest speed lowest drag most enpensive unit on the market i'm sure but i have head really good luck and use out of mine and am very happy with them. i purchased my first shell holder at a gun show, the second i think i remember picking up from here, at galati international, and cheapterthandirt.com has carried the tacstar brand in the past but i believe now carries the cheaper(in price and probabally quality) leapers brand...

a quick google search of the terms "tacstar, or any other manufacturer you wish to go with", and "sidesaddle", accompanied by your personal "make of shotgun", should produce results, then just figure out wich sites have the best prices and reputation and you're set...

hope this helps!..

K.

So you disagree that’s the reason lots of people chose a pump for defence? That’s about the only reason I’ve ever really heard given……. eta well maybe price among some but not for the gun nuts

I never said I didn’t like auto shotguns got enough to prove diffrent

I've followed this thread since the start. I'm primarily a Mossberg 500 fan. However, I was in a small outdoor/fishing/hunting/gun shop today and saw a Browning BPS with a 7 shot extended tube. It has the bottom eject just like the old Ithaca 37's. I didn't measure it but I'd say it was 18.5 -20 inches. It had the tang mounted safety like the Mossbergs.

The only thing thought should be changed was that it only had a silver bead for a sight. I'd love to have something like that with a ghost ring rear sight and a tritium front sight.

They wanted $440 for it which seems pretty fair for a Browning.

Any thoughts on this for home defense and where I might find sights that would work on it.

John

PS: Saw a Benelli Nova with ghost ring sights at Gander Mountain for $399 but it was only a 4 round tube. I understand being a foreign-made shotgun that you can't put an extended tube on it.

If you have a mossberg with a plastic safety, they are prone to break. When it does, you will lose small parts and jam up the gun. I think Brownells sell a metal replacement. I found out about this when mine broke, before I lost it in an unfortunate financial accident.

Remington 870 Express with a Choate magazine extension for me.  No folding or pistol grip stocks for this old Fudd.  Just doesn't point as well for me as a traditional shotgun stock.  Also, given the low magazine capacity of a shotgun the ability to butt stroke someone is a plus.

Not trying to bag on one or the other but I shoot shotguns alot and both my mossbergs have had failures involving the ejector screw letting go and having to beat the guns open in the field (835 and a 500) a drop of locktite fixes the problem but with 870's i have never had a issue. I do not own ether mossy now

Now that you mention it I have seen that exact problem happen as well.  A friend bought a brand new in the box Model 500 and the ejector screw broke off the first time he used it.  He took it back to the shop and exchanged it for an 870.
