Regarding alcohol, I'm not sure the fifth of JW Red would be that useful.

OTOH, airplane bottles of booze could be worth quite a bit more, as it's easier to bargain with small quantities.  And i's easier to use for disinfection/medicinal purposes.

Speaking of things women would find valuable, birth control - I bet those female condoms might be worth a lot more later than now.  Likewise the "morning after" pill - which, as I understand, is simply 2 doses of 2 regular BC pills, taken in rapid succession.  Get the GF to get another prescription of the right type, do a mail order to get it 3-4 months at a time, and there's about 20 morning after doses for $8.

Oh, and PMS meds - women who need them, NEED them, and that's coming from women I know.

Rolling papers and bulk tobacco yes...

TP maybe (takes up alot of space if you want enough to trade...

liquor, no, cost and space to store is too valuable. If you were able to make your own in the aftermath with a still as needed then yes....

I would say yes to coffee filter and cans of CHEAP coffee. THe filters will have multiple uses and people won't care how bad the coffee is if they can actually get some.

I don't know.  When there is nothing left around, I think a bottle or 2 of absolute or Johny Walker Red could get you quite a bit and nicotine addiction is a very strong addiction.  A pack of stale Marlboros would look like prime rib to smoker who hasn't seen a cigarette in a couple of days.

LOL. I just happen to have a bottle of that in storage that I've been storing for many years. I don't even drink (yeah... I know... hard to believe with my screen name). I've also got a bottle of vodka in storage as well. Though I don't drink (and never have), the wife unit like a glass or two of wine now and them. Guess I should buy her some of that for storage. She also likes coffee in the morning, but every time I suggest we buy some for storage she says "naw, I should quit anyways and that would be a good time". Of course, we all know that will NOT be a good time to go cold turkey. Guess I'd better just "sneak" a large can or two of coffee into the preps as well.

Alcohol, of any kind.
Any drugs that provide escapism
Hand crank generator
Ladies who practice the worlds oldest profession
Ammunition
Wide spectrum anti-biotic
Crappy guns to trade off
Water storage
Multiple means to purify water, both to trade, and to create water for trade
Alcohol still

Actually, it's sort of a moot point.

If there ever is a "TEOTWAWKI" situation, so many people are going to die that there won't be an REASON to turn to the dark side.

Our country is such a consumer nation, and our supplies are distributed SO horribly, that if everything just stoipped, all you'd have to do is outlive everyone by 2 months and you could pretty much pick up what you want off the ground.

This is true, and madcap72 speaks reality, whether we like to hear it or not. "The hungrier you get, the more viable it becomes." I've said it before, and I will say it again. Even though people will deny it and say they are better than that, ANY desperate person can become a predator. We prep to avoid desperation.

I agree that we're not going to REALLY know who is true to their beliefs until the real test comes. I personally think that those who've prepped to try to avoid that test are more well-prepared also to pass that test, when/if it finally comes. Most preppers simply want to be prepared for anything. That includes the hard choices.

It  is lists like these that make me wonder if the ultimate BOL wouldn't be a campground! Think of it.. a well-thought-out campground is essentially a small town. It needs a general store (so you can buy all the stuff above at wholesale prices), a gas pump (ditto gas prices), a water supply (so THAT'S the reason I need a 100,000 gallon cistern, Sheriff!), and security forces (There are bears and pumas in the woods, Sheriff, that's why we all carry .45 ACP on our hips, and an 870 on our gocarts!) A campground doesn't need to meet the legal requirements of a town, and, barring overt force, the 'leadership' of the campground cannot be voted out of office.  Lastly, the population of this "town" can be evicted at will (Sorry Campers, but there's been a 40 megaton explosion in town, and everyone has to go home!) except for those whom you wish to stay (You over there, the ones that look like NFL cheerleaders, wanna stay?).

It is corn. You can burn it or eat it. I keep 1-2 tons on hand at any given time. It is loaded into my basement via vacuum hose as shown (Ridgid 6.5hp).

Candles and any other source for light. If the power goes out, many people will have difficulty adjusting to a new situation where bedtime is around the time the sun goes down and when it rises in the morning is time to get up. Modern societies have gotten used to being able to light up the night, but without electricity they will have to adapt to a new reality.

When the Y2K Scare, aka the "EOTWAWKI that didn't happen", was priming up the months before Y2K actually popped and fizzled, I came to one conclusion.  So many people were stocking up and building their huge stockpiles and reserves of food, water, soap, fuel, etc.  Many were fortifying their homes and/or provisioning secret mountain hideaways.

Then it hit me...one dreadful & horrible conclusion...  The one with the biggest baddest meanest most disciplined private army would win.

In some Arnold Schwarzennegger-like voice...."IF YOU CAN'T DEFEND IT, IT WON'T MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE.  IT WILL ALL BE MINE"...kept ringing in my head.

I'd stock up on ammo, AR's, BMG's, NVG's, MRE's, manuals, and then build a close network of friends & family who will trust you to lead and arm them.

Alcohol - the higher the proof the better.  You can always dilute it and booze only improves with age.

Condoms - folks will want these (regardless of brand) after their SO has run out of BC pills.  Easy to store, many in a box, can be traded in any quantity and desired by virtually everyone.

I'm not for tobacco due to the problem with it going stale.

Salt will be a HUGE trade item once people start butchering animals themselves rather than relying on stores for their meat.  That said, the meat supply, including game animals, will dry up really fast in a lot of states (including Ohio).  After that, only cannibals will have to worry about preserving fresh meat - and I don't want to trade with them!

Always the guys with a couple months or a year on the board who proposes this type of stuff.

I've been putting stuff up, Learning new skills, figuring out how to do things when no one was around to show me what to do for about 10 years or so now. That rice and beans that is put up in buckets? I can actually make food with it that I enjoy eating. I have a small agrden plot that I plant about 3 seasons out of the year. I try to can anything that I can't use right away. I needed a new belt, so I made one. Cut, shaped, tooled, dyed. I'm also in the process of building a forge for blacksmithing. I'd like to learn to make tools and simple things.

I live out in the Country. 20 miles or so outside of town limits. I'm surrounded for miles by aunts, uncles, cousins etc. Most of them have better "preps" just from living the way they do, as farmers and country folk. I know them by name, and have a familial blood connection. I have the prerequisite GD armory with a few 45s, a couple 9s, few ARs, few shotguns, few hunting rifles. And a few 1000 rounds for each one (little short on shells tho).

Only 2 roads leading into little area. Both are small rural highways. 2 sides of our little 40 mile or so square is bordered by river.

Now having said all that, Why in the hell would I let you get anywhere near my home when TEOTWAWKI happens? You would literally have to hike thru the woods atleast 12 or so miles to even get close.

IDK, it's almost as if some people think that being a badass and owning a gun will do things for them. Why not start now and get to a level where you are comfortable with your own preps and don't have to become a douchebag MZB?

Now all of the above is moot, if you meant to say you were planning on feeding off the urbanites and apartment dwellers, so be it.

Be careful dramsey2k4...

I've been on and off this board since 1998...
I just couldn't remember what my logon and pswd was since I last logged on sometime EARLY 2009...because I'd been way too busy TRYING TO KEEP MY JOB SO I'D HAVE A HOUSE FOR MY WIFE & KIDS... so I created a new ARFCOM logon & pswd.

So I'm the veteran... and dramsey2k4 "-the-younger" (Member since 2005 or am I wrong?)...thanks for pointing out my miscommunicated remarks.

....

So... if you're heavily defended, then why in the world will I bother to take from you?  There will be 100's of easier opportunities to forage, find, and take provisions during the first few months and year or two of EOTWAWKI.

I WASN'T AIMING THE REMARKS AT FELLOW ARFCOM'ers!  You guys are doing the RIGHT THING BY BEING ON THIS SITE.  Its the numbnuts in the cities who believe in a passive citizenry that doesn't need a 2nd Amendment but think storing vast amounts of provisions with no means to defend it is the thing to do!  They will be "easy pickin"...  So yes...maybe I was proposing "planning on feeding off the urbanites and apartment dwellers"...as you so nicely put it.

But the fact remains... if you intend to stay put, someone will eventually find you.  And if its a large enough force opposing you, gooooooood luuuuuuuck.   Not only do you have to have a large private force, the best or biggest weapons, but you also better have the toughest fortifications.  If its a real EOTWAWKI - NO governing authority, aka ANARCHY, then it won't matter what you've got to make you "rich in the aftermath" unless you can defend it.

After Europe's "Dark Ages" what society arose?  In ancient Asia, before unified China was born, what society existed?  In pre-Columbian America, what societal structure existed?  Fuedalism...a warrior society, where the aristotocrats were the warrior class.  Shoguns, Lords & Knights, Emperors, and so on.

Why not study Haiti after the earthquake, and Chile now.  Look at other recent past disasters... the looting, violence, pillaging, and desperation.  EOTWAWKI isn't going to be pretty...

Get used to that "ringing in your head" if you're going to ask any silly question about EOTWAWKI.

Gen 3 Night Vision is probably our single largest military advantage, and would be an absolutely crushing force multiplier among the masses.

Discuss.

I LIKE YOUR THINKING. SOLAR PANELS...GREAT IDEA. NEED BATTERIES TO STORE SOME POWER, MAYBE ADD THERMAL IMAGING SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS TO THOSE FORTIFICATIONS WE HAVE TO BUILD TO STORE AND DEFEND ALL THOSE THINGS THAT WILL MAKE US "RICH IN THE AFTERMATH".

A PVS14...DAMN! HOW'D I FORGET THAT! HEY - SORRY TO ALL ABOUT BLOWING THIS THREAD A DIFFERENT WAY...

If I had to chose something that would make me rich in the aftermath, guns, ammo, grenades, firepower, tanks, mortars, PVS/NVG, and fortifications notwithstanding... I would pick... The September 1983 issue of Playboy featuring Barbara Edwards... who became 1984's Playmate of The Year... man, those were the days...

OK, seriously... I would pick the latest crop seeds, pesticides, herbicides, the knowledge to produce more seed (so you can sell it), and Reverse Osmosis and Water Filtration equipment.

I don't believe anything will stabilize humanity unless it first solves how it can feed itself and obtain clean drinking water in the aftermath, regardless of how many survive.

I think a steam boiler and sawmill would be the post EOW equivalent to a surface vein of wire gold on quartz. Might as well have a planer too. Turn people's logs into finished lumber, charge 5 or 10% of the product for your service, for your own use or for barter, and burn the scraps and scrubwood for power.

A working windmill and generator, especially one capable of generating power for several homes or tooling setups, would be the post EOW equivalent of a diamond mine today.

"There will be 100's of easier opportunities to forage, find, and take provisions during the first few months and year or two of EOTWAWKI."

And thousands of other people looking to "take advantage" of those opportunities. They will be your competition for those resources you're talking about killing and stealing for, as well as for any resources you may have. Just remember, for anybody thinking about trying to survive as the "baddest mofo", there's always somebody badder.

FourDeuce - Please tell me something new.  I knew that just thinking 5 minutes about EOTWAWKI.  Of course "there's always somebody badder".  I DIDN'T SAY I WAS!  I'm just saying that the largest most heavily armed and aggressive force would likely win in the aftermath of EOTWAWKI.

And BTW - how many people do YOU know who have a large heavily armed, well provisioned, and fortified private army? I don't know a damned one and it sure isn't me or mine!

But I can tell you who they are - Drug Lords, Organized Crime Lords, and organized inner city Street Gangs.  They number in the 10,000's.

So fellow ARFCOMer's, stop bashing me and THINK ABOUT THOSE THUGS who will think nothing of trekking through "120 miles of forest" and more to get at YOU, especially if they're desperate.

So tell me something new, propose a more peaceful solution that meets an "EOTWAWKI Reality".  But I think that any solution will have a bad ending for years and maybe decades.
