Iceland is way hurting, no doubt. We're hurting now and it could get worse, no doubt. But Glenn Beck and his magic underwear are 11 months late to this news item. Babies take less time to gestate! So pardon me if I don't make a midnight run to Wal-Mart to clean them out of canned goods.

Was anyone disappointed with Becks program from last night (thursday 10/29)?  I thought it was good and really brought a lot of his shows over the last several weeks together for people to see the bigger picture.

The portion of his explanation where he discusses how Obama's minions are going after our rights to own and carry firearms was very very disturbing to me.  Something tells me "they" are closer to achieving their goals of stripping us of our rights than we know.

But.......what the hell?!!!!  Today the guv't told us the recession is officially over....it's all good.  We're in a recovery....what we're recovering to I don't know, but it's all good now.....

Yeah, right.  It's a recovery for those that never felt even a pin prick in this whole deal from the beginning, even though they caused it from the start.  Glad I gave 40% of my earnings so they can get multi million$ bonuses for fucking up the system for the rest of us.

The GDP numbers are weird. The initial look behind the curtain shows some interesting items...

First - The cash for clunkers program did boost the GDP a bit - perhaps a full percentage point. But we all know this was a one shot deal. No trend here.

Second - Disposable income dropped.

Third - Personal taxes are on the rise. (combine this with the item above - does that sound good?)

Fourth - import and export numbers show big swings, but the data with freight loadings and # of containers doesn't jive. Need to look into this more.

Fifth - Unemployment continues to climb.

Someone tell me how we can proclaim recovery when we're bringing home less money, our taxes are going up and more and more people are unemployed?

The stock market rallied with this news (no surprise here) but did you see gold? It also took a nice bump and the dollar fell.

Reports are that people are returning to "big brands", but these are dangerous times to begin spending money above the absolute necessities.

Oh, and lets not forget that Pelosi and company rolled out their health care plan. Written behind closed doors to republicans and they've set it up to not allow ANY amendments to the plan in its current form. They're choosing to "go it alone" and the 51 vote option is their preferred method to ram this through.

weird gdp indeed.  numbers i saw indicated 1.7% of the 3.5% were from the clunkers deal.  also, consumption was down, investment was weak, which pretty much leaves .gov expenditures propping up the gdp.

yesterdays market gains, as of now, are gone, and then some.  shows the market is playing on feel good news, not sound investment strategies.

lot of bad news all across the board.  gmac looking for a few more billion.  cbo stating health care bill would cost 1.055 trillion.

this will all end poorly.

You're certainly correct the GDP numbers are nothing to cheer about. It seems the stock market has figured that out today.

I've seen exactly one Glen Beck program and this was it. I really enjoyed his concerns and his delivery as we should all be concerned about Government overspending. I believe this is the single biggest threat to our way of life. He sort of goes off the deep end near the end of the program where he speculates there's some sort of conspiracy or some sort of big picture.  I really believe this is all stupidity of our government officials who, as usual, create a program that short circuits the free market that has the opposite effect when put into practice. The TARP funds were meant to provide stability, the result has been huge bonuses for the people who brought us this crisis and a bunch of zombie banks like Japan has had. With the new administration, we've now got a bunch of social spending in that program, and there is no inclination for Geitner to simply return the funds to the general fund once there paid back. I'm going to guess he'll respend that money as he likes in accordance with Obama's socialistic agenda. Many people on this board who supported the TARP funds should pay attention to the final outcome.

Every time I hear about the imminent American currency failure, I really question the source. Long term, yes I'm very much concerned for the very reasons Glen Beck sites. Think, next 10 year or so, I'd expect some trouble. I'm not rushing out to buy (more) precious metals though. Short term, there are just too many other good prospects. Great Britain's Pound, the east block European countries, even the Japanese Yen have more chance of imploding.  The Japanese have an enormous demographic problem that will make it difficult for them to pay back their national debt. If anything, the Dollar might get stronger in the short term as some other currency crisis manifests itself.

Did I hear correctly that the GDP numbers reported today only include the fraction that covers the government spending side of GDP?  Yeah, that's up!
Either way, it's getting harder and harder to accept ANY gov't statistics at reported value, and coincidentally it's getting harder to follow up the sources of the data. From what I've read or heard, (and I apologize in advance for not being able to site my sources; I've really got to start writing these down), the unemployment numbers are so manipulated they mean nothing.  Not just the "Shadow stats" thing, but official BLS numbers being so fudged, it takes a team of statiticians to glean reality out of the reports.  The numbers they report show continued job losses at approximately 700k a month.

I had a discussion with one of my employees today regarding the feeeling that we simply cannot accept any of the "information" coming out lately, because the current PTB need to send out out an optomistic message to get this thing rolling.  Problem is, it doesn't seem like the people are buying it (pun intended).

No, we haven't.  Iran and Afghanistan are occupations with an insurgency, a textbook case of fourth gen war.

Let me preface this with the statement that the following is my opinion, based on much of what I read here and elsewhere on the net.  I am no economist, I'm just a disabled plumber with too much time to think..

The dollar is soon going to tank.  The "full faith and credit" of the US Gov't is a joke, Baraq Hussien is printing up Monopoly money as fast as he thinks he can get away with it.  The Chinese will have no choice other than to help themselves to a "piece of the action" when we change over to a new currency, particularly if that new currency is secured by real estate as envisioned by Beck and others.  The Chinese government will lose control of the population if we default on our debt to them, or try to inflate our way out of it.

I suspect that if indeed we change currency, in order for the Chinese to accept it, they will demand that they establish a presence here to oversee their investments.  Baraq Hussein will indeed very likely invite them here rather than have the Chinese suddenly dump all of their dollar denominated debt on the international market.  While the Chinese have many reasons not to do so,  if they are facing the rapid erosion of the dollar they will have no other choice but to take 10 cents on the dollar and bail.  They will effectively defeat us without battle and in stark terms, occupy the USA.

Russia is the wildcard in this event.  The Russians hate socialism with good reason, and are dumbfounded that we elected a communist under an assumed name like Baraq Hussein.  Russia will not stand idly by while the Chinese assume control here, the 3 way balance of power between Russia, China, and the USA will be greatly tipped against Russia.  They will have to do something..

I can readily see China attempting to occupy the USA, and once Americans find out how brutal the Chinese can be, it will be time for Red Dawn.  This time, the Russians will be on our side, supporting the American insurgency against China.

I see this as one of several outcomes, and hopefully, the most severe.  I don't see what could be much worse, but I have been surprised before.

Interesting times, and strange days indeed.

Interesting. Just by coincidence or perhaps someone knew something a couple years ago, "Red Dawn" is in production now and due out September 2010 and it's not the Russians and Cubans this time, it's the Chinese.

I don't really think your scenario could play itself out. I think if The United States was ever going to have a military coup, it would be if the President were to allow occupying troops from another country onto our soil.

I'm more with Gerri on this.... Beck has it right, but the timing of the fall of the dollar will be more drawn out....
Also, probably not a TOTAL colapse, but more like 40-60% reduction of value... slide into a third world standard of living.  Life will be more focused on just getting by & daily FOOD!    I doubt that there will be many if any other places in the world much better though.  We had a BIG party with a lot of borrowed money for awhile- I'll have to say that "IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED"!   Time to pay the piper for all of us...
That does not mean that we can not be happy though...  my parents said that they were pretty happy during the '30s Depression- just nobody had much in the way of money/things..
I suspect that those in city/urban areas are going to have a tougher time...

The Chinese can't make this happen without a legitimate navy, which by coincidence they are currently developing.  Our security very much depends on the oceans that separate us from them.

i agree. i think we're in a downward trend that will last a long painful while.  we'll probably have moments of steep declines, w/ occasional rallies.

i also agree that people can be happy even if it's the depression part II, except now people are no where near as hard working (in general) and independent.  too many believe what you have, whether from your own hard work or welfare, is what makes you happy.  it will also be hard for many to start over w/ nothing.
