I picked up an upper from Rudy some time back... think it was the tail end of 2015. Very nice setup, but being I just ran 10 round HK USC magazines (Promag didn't have the quality for me to feel comfortable with), I kind of put it on the back burner. Currently changing jobs, which requires a move out of this s***hole (NJ) to Maine... so I kind of got interested in shooting the .45 again. Might be fueled by it being one of my main rifles that has 10 rounders available (my 15 rounders are on house arrest, waiting on an injunction for the new 10 round law or going to take a vacation to PA until I move).
It is a 16" upper with a target crown (I might see about having it threaded when I leave, as a .45 suppressor is on my list of things to pick up). Standard setup, using the USC adapter. I do have the adapter for the new magazines, but holding off until I can order the 20s legally. I originally did the build with a polymer lower, but swapped out with a Spikes... using an ACE Ultra Light Entry stock.
Gun ran great, but I could never get the bolt to lock back on empty. Very accurate, which I observed again today. Figured it was the bolt moving too fast, which is an issue I just fixed on my 5.56mm AR not too long ago (ended up needing to go H buffer; was a JP SCS, which was a little more involved to adjust). So, I ordered a three pack of Tungsten weights off eBay, and swapped it with one of the steel ones in my buffer (standard carbine buffer).
Went to the range with some Winchester white box 230 grain FMJ... did have some UMC bulk, but I figured no point diagnosing it further (see below). Loaded three rounds in each magazine... only one failed to lock back. I picked up a few used magazines, and that one seems to have a messed up spring (ordering a new one tonight). But once I pulled the bad magazine out of the group, I noticed it failing to lock back periodically when hot. Now, could also have been the lube wearing off by then, as the last time I serviced it was March of 2016 (grease stayed on the lugs, but think any oil dripped out/dried up; didn't have any in my range bag). I did swap in a second Tungsten weight for a magazine... which dampened recoil, but still didn't lock back (went back to the H setup, just until I try it out again with a properly lubed rifle).
I really wasn't paying too much attention with ejection, but when I ran the "H" buffer, I did noticed it ejecting somewhat forward. Had a few pieces of brass end up on the counter in front of me, but had a lot under my feet. When I swapped in the "H2" buffer, I did have brass bounce off the partition, and hit my elbow. I also noticed about a magazine worth of casings slightly behind me... which was likely from that H2 magazine run. Just an observation, but I couldn't tell how it was ejecting shy of that.
So, was just wondering what other people are using as buffers. I know the standard carbine buffer is a no-go for me, but need to shoot more to figure out if either the H or H2 would be better.
