TNVC, INC. WFOV (Wide Field of View) Night Vision Goggle OverviewAs one of the leading suppliers of Night Vision and Visual Augmentation Systems products, training, and education we take pride in our mission of educating consumers
first before making a sale--we believe that a well educated consumer is the best consumer, and while it's easy to make a sales pitch or copy and paste marketing materials we believe that providing vetted, accurate, and relevant information is far more valuable.
TNVC and NGI's professional staff are not sales people--TNVC is a veteran-founded and veteran-owned company, and our technical, training, and education staff all come from the ranks of professional military and law-enforcement end-users who are not just passionate about NV and VAS products and technology, but have direct, first-hand experience employing these technologies in real-world situations before coming to be industry professionals, and understand the valuable of knowledge and education and accurate information about products that doesn't come out of a sales brochure.
With the
full commercial release of the L3Harris GPNVG for open commercial sale and the Noise Fighters Panobridge, WFOV (Wide Field of View) NVGs have become an increasingly common topic of discussion, however, because WFOV NVG systems have been so limited in the past, there are relatively few users with direct, first-hand experience with a wide variety of WFOV systems--in many cases people are simply repeating hearsay and second-hand information, or based on limited and fleeting experience with WFOV NVGs.
Because of the relative sparseness of information spread in small bits over various places and as part of our mission to educate consumers first, TNVC has released an Unlimited Distribution WFOV Night Vision Goggle Overview White Paper for full public consumption:
TNVC, INC. WFOV (Wide Field of View) Night Vision Goggle OverviewWhite Papers are nothing new in professional circles both within and outside of the "tactical" industry, and TNVC has generated many White Papers over the years for smaller audiences, usually government customers, however, with the wide popularity in WFOV goggles, we felt that it was worthwhile to release an Unlimited Distribution document to answer many people's questions about the history, advantages, and disadvantages of WFOV NVGs.
WFOV NVGs have been one of the most highly sought after developments since the introduction of Generation III NVDs and have a long history of development by the DoD, Night Vision Manufacturers, and independent innovators. However, despite years of research and development and considerable desire to develop WFOV systems, few WFOV NVG systems have been successfully developed and fielded. Because of the limitations of current image intensifier and optical lens technologies, any attempts to increase FOV beyond the conventional 40
o FOV incurs significant penalties in performance, weight, cost, or a combination of the three.
The patent pending Panobridge MK2 is an innovative new product from Noisefighters, featuring a lifetime transferable warranty and made in the USA.
At its base, the Panobridge MK2 is a featherweight articulating bridge system for PVS-14 style MNVDs–by using high strength Arkema-based polymers and additive manufacturing, Noisefighters has been able to create the lightest PVS-14 bridge system on the market, at 1.5 ounces and weighing 40-70% less than many other dual PVS-14 bridge systems on the market.
The MK2 variant of the Panobridge has also been updated with revised BNVS dovetail dimensions for a more solid lockup on a wider variety of manufacturers’ mounts, as well as the addition of a lanyard loop allowing the user to more easily secure the device.
In addition to being an extremely lightweight PVS-14 bridge system, the Panobridge introduces a new, patent pending “AFOV” or Adjustable Field of View system that allow users to yaw the monoculars between a “center neutral” position, offering a traditional 40 degree field of view, up to 20 degrees outboard in a “Diverging Image Tube” (DIT-NVG) or “wall eye” configuration, providing up to a 75 degree lateral field of view* via friction adjustable pivots on the center “hub” of the Panobridge.
This AFOV system allows users to temporarily increase their lateral field of view without permanent modifications to the device or specialized WFOV NVG systems that can be heavy and extremely expensive, with most WFOV systems having never left the specialized military prototype development.
This expanded lateral field of view can be extremely useful during activities like static observation, allowing the user to scan a wider area more quickly and with more economy of movement, while allowing the user to return to a more traditional 40 degree field of view once something of interest has materialized. It is important to note, however, that because PVS-14 style systems are designed to be viewed directly through the center of the device and do not use specialized WFOV optical lenses, image intensifier and image quality are severely degraded when using the Panobridge in the WFOV configuration, with an estimated 20-30% loss in resolution (lp/mm) and overall image quality and tube performance. TNVC DOES NOT recommend using the Panobridge in the WFOV DIT-NVG configuration for dynamic operations such as kinetic entry or vehicle operation due to the severely degraded performance in WFOV configurations.
While the Panobridge is NOT a “Poor Man’s GPNVG” and nevertheless retains the same issues as all bridged monocular systems, the AFOV feature does allow increased field of view, the benefits of which cannot be overstated, especially when scanning wide areas–the ability to gain 50% more FOV at a single glance can translate to 50% less movement during wide area scans, thereby reducing neck strain and movement, and since the device can return to conventional configuration, the performance loss is non-permanent.
While the Panobridge is not for everyone, this innovative new bridge system allows more users access to a WFOV system without having to invest significant sums in dedicated WFOV systems and/or having to give up the ability to use their NVGs in a conventional 40 degree configuration at a relatively low cost, especially given its light weight and features!
