If someone did the following, what would it weigh exactly?
Colt 6720 carbine: Advertised at 6.2 lbs. Replace M4 stock with Fiberite telstock. Replace M4 DHS handguards with CAR handguards. Replace H buffer with standard carbine buffer. 5.?? lbs. |
|
[#2]
How crazy low weight could I get it and still maintain the traditional look?

a 5.5, 5.8 carbine would be pretty nice!
that is almost the weight of a M1 carbine. at 5.6 that would be very lightweight and should be do-able. |
|
[#5]
While the actual numbers probably aren’t much, I have a cutdown 6720 that’s PW to 16”. That rifle “feels” much lighter/maneuverable than my standard 6720.
It’s not quite apples to apples as the cutdown has C7 upper while the 6720 was stock with a MBUS on it so it should be close. |

[#6]
The greatest weight saving would be to replace the barrel with an original type "pencil" barrel.
Colt used to advertise their M4 based thin barrel model at a little over 5 pounds. For more weight reduction you could install a civilian type non-auto bolt carrier, replace the fore end with a light weigh version like the MagPul Carbine type, and go with the lightest sight type you can find. You can also go with an ultra-light simplified design butt stock. |

Quoted: https://i.imgur.com/mi4yLSv.jpg Everything you just described minus the carbine buffer. This has the H1 buffer. Total weight is 5 lbs 12 ounces. I still think this is one of the best carbines Colt has ever produced. Originally mine came with a matech sight & a Roger's stock. I replaced it with a Troy sight and I will go back to the Roger's stock, its a better stock than the fiberlite, only a difference of 2 ounces. Not a fan of the fiberlite, the butt is too tiny. View Quote it is beautiful in that config! with a carbine buffer, maybe at 5 11oz. with a plastic sight even less. beautiful! lightweight....... damn airweight. just think if it had a 14.5 bbl. |

Yeah, its so light it almost feels like a toy. And you could shave off a little bit more if you swapped the bolt carrier for a semi-auto carrier. A full auto carrier isn't actually needed anyways because it's only a semi auto carbine. You could go real crazy and get an aluminum or titanium barrel nut and castle nut & endplate but probably more money & work than it's worth. edit: I just compared the Colt M16 bcg to a DPMS semi-auto bcg, and the semi-auto only weighs half an ounce less than the M16 bcg. Not really as much a difference as I was expecting. M16 11.5 oz > Dpms semi 11 oz |

You could lose a half pound with a cav/gwacs lower.
I have 2, one is a 6520 take off upper on an LMT Defender 2000 lower with an H1 in a KZ carry handle mount. The other is a 6720 upper new in box waiting for a project. I also have a 6520/6720 barrel sealed in a bag that I cant decide what to do with, I love the skinnies. |

If I cut the nub off which I want to because I can't stand it, it'd probably get it to an even 2 ounces. Another thing is I have a set of Colt expanse handguards that weigh even less than the shiny car handguards. The shiny weighs 6 oz compared to the expanse weighs 4 ounces. |

View Quote standard issue years ago. long out of production. gunbroker has one or two and they can be found on ee. colts past attempt to prevent any chance of their carrier resembling an auto carrier and to clear a sporter sear block. of course there are low mass carriers in current production by other makers but i like the idea of a colt theme. |

Quoted: Some also came with the Bayo lugged shaved. Don’t know how much weight that shaves off View Quote Yes, one of the last versions on the 6720 they were offering had a shaved bayo lug and came with a carry handle. This was quite a while after Colt stopped including carry handles. They were a good price at the time, kind of regret not getting one. |

[#22]
if you wanted to shave another oz, a person could mill out the web block that colt uses in the lower as an anti dias/sear measure.
or use a sp1 slab side lower. i bet that weighs less than a m4 or ar-15a4 lower. heck with every possible measure discussed including the expanse handguards, 5lb 6oz is achievable. damn thing would feel like a toy yet still be a true colt. |

Quoted: I can’t believe someone paid $527 for that... WTF View Quote Agreed. And look at the finer details. The Troy ambi mag release left side mag button is retained with twist wire. The BAD lever is an Allen wrench welded to the factory bolt catch. And the wings of the Magpul receiver endplate have been ground down. That rifle is a WECSOG turd at its finest. |

a little research found that the Colt Expanse handguards are actually Double Star CAR handguards.
easily found for sale and what was sourced in making the Expanse. the reason they are 2oz lighter is because they are, very inexpensive handguards. i will use them seeing that they are super light and technically a colt used part. |

Quoted: Project complete for me. New in box 6720 (no QR code and every single marking stamped). Factory weight: 5.976 lbs or 5 lbs 15.62 oz. *Replaced M4 handguards with Colt skinny from Sharkarms. *Replaced M16 carrier with Colt halfmoon SA carrier. *Replaced M4 stock with Brownells fiberlite. Will buy a Colt if I ever find one reasonable. *Replaced H buffer with Colt standard carbine buffer. End weight as follows: 5.624 lbs or 5 lbs 9.98 oz Total weight reduction = 5.63 oz. That is the best I could do. Very light but I thought I could do better. https://imgur.com/0o9uAdy.jpg https://imgur.com/9FD197D.jpg View Quote Interesting topic! I replaced the M4 hardguards and M4 buttstock on a 2009 Colt 6520 (basically a 6720 except with an A2 upper not the flat top A4). I used the Brownells CAR-15 stock and DS Arms CAR-15 handguards and am pleased with both. The weight savings was about 4.8 ounces bringing my rifle down to 5 lbs 13.9 oz. Going from my H buffer to a standard carbine buffer would shave off 0.9 oz to 5 lbs 13.0 oz but I'll stay put and also keep my M16 BCG (thinking the combo is a better match with the carbine length gas system on a 16" barrel). So the A2 upper only adds about 2.5 oz over the flat top. I was surprised that my 14.5" BCM with a pencil barrel was heavier at 6 lbs 3 oz. Subtracting 3.4 oz for its Matech rear sight takes it just under 6 pounds but even an MBUS would add 1.3 oz bringing the BCM to 6 lbs 0.9 oz. The BCM has midlength gas plus BCM furniture which add a few ounces, making the BCM 3 ounces neavier than my 6520. Still, it's super lightweight and is my go-to carbine. |
