Hello all,
I am asked this question at least once a week. I have made a list of the main advantages and disadvantages between the PVS-14 and the MUM. I hope this will help you all with your decision making process. Thanks all!
Advantages with the MUM (Mini-14)
-Lighter weight (approx. 5oz) and good for prolonged head use.
-Option for a hand-select tube. Important if you're in a very dark area to option a high performance tube.
-Water proof down to 66'
-Comes with a better host of standard accessories, including a weapon mount, demist shield, sac window.
-Single battery configuration (CR123 or AA) 40 hour run time
-ITT Data card standard on all mums (Select-A Units that I sell)
-Can be put into a binocular configuration by use of a bridge.
Disadvantages with the MUM
-Non-adjustable gain, does have “ABC” (auto-brightness control)
-Lack of various weapon mounts, but the new MUM rail mount is great. The included standard mount is a so-so mount with some wobbles.
-Non-threaded lens.
Advantages with the PVS-14
-Adjustable Gain (good for urban environments and snow cover)
-A bit more robust body housing
-A host of weapon mounts from GG&G, ARMS and Larue. (I like GG&G’s versatility the best)
-Threaded Lens.
Disadvantages with the PVS-14
-A bit heavier than the MUM, very slight though, at approx. 5oz's.
-Water proof down to 6' for a half hour.
-Lack of a hand-select tube, as they come fully assembled from ITT.
