Quoted: I know some of you are curious about how the laser engraved markings look when compared to the traditional rollmarks. Since I have three AR-15A4 variations in my collection, I created two different images showing the lower receiver magazine well markings of the three different Colt firearms. In the first image I have also indicated year of production/purchase. I know there are die-hard traditionalists who will always like the old rollmarks best, but I am glad to see Colt making changes to be competitive in the market place and I think they have done a good job with the new laser engraved markings. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/336740/IMG_20210716_215350_157_jpg-2016279.JPG https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/336740/IMG_20210716_215350_188_jpg-2016281.JPG View Quote Had a chance to really go through the recent acquisition yet? Curious if the hinge/latch on the trapdoor migrated to polymer. I picked up the locally sourced “Carbine” variant today. I didn’t need it but the price was right at $950 & tax. Upper/lower fit was very nice (unlike one I handled at a big box several months ago). I noticed the latch was polymer now. Pretty sure the latch used to be metal despite the door itself being polymer. Other points of interest: Born 6/30 with selector stops intact R marked barrel under handguard and no barrel date (as expected). “C M P 5.56 NATO 1/7” like other recent pictures Stamped cage code upper w/ square forge Faint “MPC” and “A” bolt Electro penciled “C” on the carrier Gas key and bolt were the lighter gray/green park finish...carrier was darker black. F3 marked hammer The trigger guard was cage coded. |

And oddly, Bushmaster had all mil-spec A2 stocks shipping on their rifles in 2003 when I bought my first ever AR from them. Gray dry lube coated 7075 receiver extensions, as well as aluminum trap doors with steel latches... The days of a true mil-spec A2 stock are long over unfortunately.

Well at least the lettering is consistent. My rifle says Cult on it, the top half of the O wasn't rolled on too good.

View Quote I’ve come to the conclusion that it isn’t so much engraving vs stamped, it’s either the fonts or procedure colt uses to engrave their lowers that make it look goofy. This week I jumped ship and picked up a rifle from a different manufacturer. The lower is fully engraved on it and all the markings look very nice on it and way more “professional” than the Colt engraved lowers. |

Sorry to revive an old thread but has anyone seen if Colt is doing anything different or even making Ar15A4 type rifles anymore? There's still Cr6700a4 floating around but those aren't even listed on Colts website anymore and I heard the OEM rifles are no longer being marked "carbine"? Does that mean we could soon be seeing AR15A4 or rifle marked rifles soon??
I've really got a craving for a M16A4 style rifle but right now it looks like PSA is bout the only game in town asides from the "carbine" 6700a4 |

I bought one of the "Carbine" marked A4's a couple months back.
Decided I wanted another, and looking around I saw some had the Cr6700 item code and others AR15A4. I ordered one from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore. Had a good experience with them a while back with those ONG marked 870's, so I gave them a try. They confirmed by email these were marked AR15A4 on the magwell. It showed up today, and my FFL confirmed over the phone that it was marked that way. $1049.99 with free shipping. https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/137552 |

Anyone want to try and get a group buy together and get some 80% lowers engraved matching the current “CARBINE” lowers but instead of “CARBINE” has “RIFLE” on it?
I have a 20” a4 upper I need to do something with. |

[#41]
This isn’t related to the 20” A4 but is about markings in general. Last month I bought a CR6960 and it’s the first “CARBINE” marked Colt I have. The font looks exactly like the markings people have posted pics of the new complete CR6920 rifles out there. Today I picked up a CR6940 with a much higher serial number than the 6960 and the font is noticeably different in several ways. It’s bigger and goes deeper into the aluminum, the circle around the rampant colt is shallow in the middle- almost looks roll marked, and Connecticut is abbreviated “CT” instead of “CONN” like it is on every Colt I’ve ever seen. Has anyone else noticed this?

It is very possible for you to have a lower receiver with a higher serial number that is rollmarked and a lower number serial number receiver that was laser engraved. You will also see some lower receivers that have a mix of rollmarks and laser engraving. More mystical details of Colt firearms. They are like a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get. Lol. |

Isn't that just Jim Dandy.
That configuration with the A2 clamshell handguards and removable carry handle almost brings it out of the 1990's. Are people actually paying EXTRA MONEY for these recently-obsolete configurations? Its not a BAD design really. So long as the sellers aren't gouging on the price, I can see where recently-separated NCO's might have the coin, and the affection, to lay in a copy of the "musket" they carred 10-15 years ago. It is entertaining to hear the young Marines talking about the 20" guns like they are some sort of "Daniel Boone rifle." LOL. If you run enough magnification over that front sight, it almost disappears from your field of view. Almost. |
