We're heading there July 23rd-25th, will be coming from Cheyenne.

Would like to get a motel/hotel near one of the entrances west, West Yellowstone, or perhaps in Cody.

We plan to hit the north end of the park one day and hit the south the next day then going through Jackson Hole on day three back to Cheyenne... lots of driving I know.

Any recommendations? Looks like we're in for about $300 a night.

If you want to come in from the Idaho side try looking for lodging in West Yellowstone, Montana.  It's about 3 feet north of Idaho and right on the Western Edge of YNP.  From W Yellowstone you have about 14 miles of driving along the Madison River before you hit Madison Junction.  You can turn left there and go see the falls and other northern parts of the park.  You can turn right and hit the Firehole River, Old Faithful, and Grand Prismatic Spring (stay on the boardwalk).  In two days you won't have much time to see much else.

That is still a very highly visited time of year.  Don't get sticker shock for the price of any available hotel with reservations this late.

Between Rexburg and West Yellowstone lies a community called Island Park.  Through it runs the Henry's Fork river.  Very beautiful area and worth the drive IMOP.

Have fun.

We're staying at the Crosswinds Inn... has among the highest ratings at 8.5/10 based on about 1200+ reviews.

It's going to be $1,080.00 plus taxes for two rooms for two nights.

Keep back from the damn WILDlife and stay on the damn boardwalks.  Every year we get some idiot who thinks the elk/moose/buffalo are domesticated and tries to pet them.  Some guy just had his rental car rammed by a heard of buffalo because they thought it was a good idea to drive right up to them.  Few months back a teenager fell off a cliff trying to get a perfect selfie.  Few years back some super idiot thought he was going to take a bath in a hot spring, he dissolved.

Bring lots of water, the lodge has some but you're gonna pay extra for it.  Pull off the road completely if your gonna look at wildlife/mountains, don't cause a buffalo jam.

Thanks. We passed on Yellowstone, sounded like a major PITA for what little time we had.

We arrived day 1 about 3pm, got checked in, rooms were really nice and we were just outside the park.

Drove back into the park and rode around until almost dark stopping along the way to see certain things. Back to West Yellowstone for dinner... not too crowded, got in rather quickly each night and had good meals.

Drove around day 2 and saw a lot of amazing things... saw a grizzly mom with two cubs... they were w/in 50 yards of us.

Got up day 3, drove around some more in the opposite direction then headed out back to Cheyenne via Jackson Hole.

Can't describe what a great time we had... and this is coming from a guy who hates crowds. It really wasn't that bad.

We are 100% sure we will go back within the next two/three years.

Flew into SLC and drove up to Lava Hot Springs, spent a couple days there, checked out some property in that area and drove back through Bear Lake and Cache national forest.

Liked the area, a little light on trees for my taste. Any of the decent priced property was stupid- 45 degree slope on the side of a mountain sixteen miles down a horse trail type stuff.

Almost got stuck on the top of a mountain cause the POS Nissan Rogue GhettoPrise car rentals gave us would not back up into dead grass... Fricking safety features in these new cars!!!

Next time in that area we will probably check out Orofino and that surrounding area.

Everyone goes to Yellowstone or Teton.  Google the Beartooth Highway aka Dead Indian Pass, a much better drive.
