been looking for jobs in alaska for a few years now.
always surprised at how cheap houses in fairbanks are. any insight into why real estate there is so cheap vs the western states in the lower 48? TIA |

As always, available work and wages.
The cost of fuel is a big deal, too. There was a statistic floated a few years ago that folks in Mississippi had more disposable income than folks around Fairbanks. |

I’d say it’s all relative. I moved here from North Carolina in 2017. My house in North Carolina was $125,000 and way bigger than the house I bought in Fairbanks for $300,000.
Housing market seems to be cooling fast here. You could be my neighbor as the house next door is for sale. |

You might want to look at your data again. Low is not a word I would use with Fairbanks COL even when used in relative terms.

Low Col? Let me know where. Your info is a bit messed up. Gas is $5.50, groceries are bad when we have them in stock, and housing is crazy.
There is a reason the State only has 750K residents after all these years. It ain't couse it's cheap. ![]() |

Funny I thought the state was as inflated as anywhere but with no obvious reason for it.
With the economy, inflation, energy costs.. I wonder how it will look come spring. |

Homes in fairbanks might be affordable to you but there are things that make many of us not want to live there
#1.) Cold as hell in the winter #2.) Fires in the summer #3.)Poor air quality in the summer AND the winter #4.)Cost of utilities is ridiculous #5.) Floods #6.) Lots of contaminated soil and water wells around fairbanks / north pole That being said MOST not all people I've ever dealt with in Fairbanks on work trips have been more open and hospitable than people when I lived in Eagle River / Chugiak. It takes a special person to live in Fairbanks and if you check these threads MANY people do the "I want to move to Alaska and be free" thing only to leave when they get divorced or broke |
