I have not had much luck with apples, but maybe I don't have a resilient cultivar.  My Bartlett pears have done exceptionally well though; huge, healthy, and delicious fruit.  I do not spray for anything, but the trick with the pears is harvesting them when they have reached full size, but before they are fully ripe.  Otherwise, wasps and other insects will get to them.  Apples have been hit or miss; mostly miss.  Can't offer much advice there.
