I’d like to find a place to shoot more than 200m. I’ve got a.338 LM and a friend just bought one, I’ve also got a couple 6.5 CM, all of which I’d like to stretch their legs (I’ve also got some .50 BMG ammo that I’m looking at rifles for). I’ve seen some places down toward Hot Springs that would be perfect, there’s nothing but grass for miles and a mountain as a backstop. I don’t think they’re public land though.

Usually I just google something like “public land X county”. This is not always super successful.

Anyone else have a different method that produces good results? I’m in Flathead County but driving a couple hours isn’t a huge issue.

Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind that just because something is public land doesn't mean shooting is allowed there, or that it is safe to do so. Use common sense. When I want to shoot long range I usually end up shooting from one mountain across to another. I've got several spots where 600+ yds is easy. The pain in the ass with this approach is it usually means you're hiking across to the other mountain to set up targets or a gong. Also, wind can be a bit tricky.

This has been a challenge for me too. Colorado and Arizona were easy to find BLM and FS maps, etc. It's kind of a pain here. I finally bought a couple of printed maps, but need to look more into if certain areas are closed to shooting.
