What handguns are commonly carried by Alaskans while out in the woods?
My wife and I are thinking about spending 2 weeks up in Fairbanks area next year on vacation and would like to see the woods and mountains. She half jokingly said I better get an appropriate sidearm for when out in the woods.  Now I'm curious just what would be an appropriate sidearm.  I currently have following handguns which may (or may not) be appropriate:

S&W 66-6 - I handload 158gr XTP @ 1,100 fps which I've used on many hogs and deer with good results
Ruger Flattop Blackhawk in 357 Magnum - I handload 180 gr WFN @1,200 fps which was used on couple of hogs here with good results
Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt - I handload 255gr SWC @ 1,000 fps which was used on many hogs and deer here with good results
Glock 21 conversion to 10mm - I handload 200 gr Flat nose @ 1,050 fps but I have not shot anything with this round yet
Glock 21 conversion to 45 Super - I handload 230gr XTP @ 1,090 fps but I have not shot anything with this round yet
Colt 1911 conversion to 45 Super - I handload 230gr XTP @ 1,150 fps but I have not shot anything with this round yet (same load as above but shot from 6" barrel)
Colt 1911 in 45ACP - I handload 230gr XTP @ 890 fps which I've used on many hogs and deer with good results.
Glock 21 in 45 ACP - I handload 230gr XTP @ 900 fps which I've used on many hogs and deer with good results (same load as above)

Among choices here which would you take?

I’d take the 10mm. It’s popular here. I carry a glock 40 in a chest holster.  Offers great power to rounds on target quickly ratio.

I like wheel guns greater than .430", a hard heavy bullet 260 grain or better, preferably 1200 fps or faster.

But if you can't get proficient with it that than the obvious fall back is a 10mm or whatever you're most proficient with.  Big bullets that miss aren't as effective as small bullets that hit.

What ammo do you carry?
I think I'm going to check into factory 45 Super and 45 Colt loads.  I believe there are factory loads that are heavier and faster than my hand load.  I think I would prefer to carry the Colt 1911 in 45 Super as I'm very familiar with that pistol and shoot it more accurately than the Glock 21 in 45 Super.

Underwood 200gr flat nose.

Of course your familiarity is most important.

Not saying you won’t see one but bears aren’t nearly as common in the interior as they are down south. Have seen a lot of very angry moose in the interior though.

I know a lot of people that have 10mm Glocks for woods guns.  Myself included.

Am I thinking too much into this?
I'm thinking that I'll just take the 1911 in 45 Super and load it with my handload of 255gr FN cast bullet @ 1,040 fps and call it good.  I've never shot any game with this round yet but have fired about 120 rounds in this pistol with no failure of any kind and had good accuracy out to 50 yards.  I'm very comfortable with the 1911 pistols as I've been shooting them for about 30 years and have used various 1911 pistol for bowling pin, IPSC, IDPA and bullseye competition during that time.  I have also been hunting deer and hogs on my property with 1911 pistols for past 20 years.  I also have couple of comfortable and appropriate OWB holsters and chest holster for this pistol.  The pistol with 3 mags and 25 rounds of this ammo should be more than sufficient.

I carry a 3" 629 .44 mag with 320 grain hardcast in a gunfighters inc chest rig, carried a Diamond D leather chest rig for many years but he Kenai blows it away. For bears just make sure you're carrying heavy hardcast bullets and not hollow points because you need penetration for bears, they are tough ass animals and will take a beating before they go down.

When I lived in Delta Junction (about 100 miles SE of Fairbanks), I carried a 4" 629 in an Alaska Backpacker chest rig whenever I went hiking around. I stoked the gun with 300 grain hard cast lead ammo.

The only time I ever saw bears was when I was actively hunting them or on the rivers during the salmon runs. I was more apt to run into a coyote or wolf than I was a bear (more than a few times).

Honestly though, unless you can hit a bucket being pulled fast toward you at least 3 times, you'd be better off with a shotgun with Brenneke Black Magic slugs.

G20's are super popular with hunters and outdoor enthusiasts including myself. Buffalo Bore or Double Tap 230gr HC.

Great choice as long as you're not running the standard Glock barrel.
