Summer vacation plans got fubar'd thanks to CoVid. Wife and I thinking about just hitting the road to explore. Thinking about driving from KC down through Arkansas to maybe the Shreveport area. Can you get a good feel for Louisiana from only going that far south? Things to do recommendations in the general area? Looking for some historical stuff, civil war, plantations, swamp stuff. Good eats that represent the area etc... Really have no plans other that to visit a state we have not been too. Could go further south if we need to. Thanks for any suggestions!

Shreveport isn't what I would call a tourist destination with the exception of the casinos.
There are things to do and see a eat, but not many.  I can't think of anything that would make the trip worthwhile off the top of my head.  Honestly, there are thing on on the way to Shreveport that are more fun.

The Norton Art Museum has a very eclectic collection and the gun room could kill a couple hours on its own.  The 8th Air Force Museum is across the river at Barskdale Air Force Base. Lots of static display aircraft.

I live in Bossier City. You need to get down to around Lafayette if you want real Cajun food. There are Casinos in the Shreveport/ Bossier Area, but that is about it. Lafayette is only another 3ish hours away.

What you may get a "feel" for is North La, which is a different state than South La.
If time permits you should try to get further south if you want to get to know the whole state.

Gators & Friends is fun.

There is a cool museum at Barksadale Air Force base

Herby K great restaurant, but in one of those more culturally diverse neighbors, that you only go there for lunch.
But it is a Shreveport Must!!

I also really like
Maryland's Place
Superior Mexican
Silver Stars BBQ

The Blind Tiger
And Ralhp & Kakoos
Are pretty good also

There is also a few casinos & some pretty good golf.

This time of year is getting pretty late for crawfish. But oyosters are going good !

The sunflowers up in Belchar (5 minutes from down town) is nice right now.

There is a lot of historical stuff around Caddo Lake.  Along with guided fishing, hole in the wall restaurants, and swamp type stuff.
{ if I Remeber correctly There is a member here who owns some cabins on the Texas Side. He tried to set up some time of gator hunt but go Arocked}
@Michauxii

Not sure what is going on with the bars & the covid. But I always liked.
Stray Cats
Havana
The Vintage
Fast Eddies

For Brewers
Flying Heart
& Red River Brewwing

Bonnie & Clyde were killed right out side of Shreveport.
Also Shreveport is where the Confederate mint was during the war.

Herby K really isn’t in a bad area. That area is actually not populated at all. Great food and well worth the trip.

Bergeron's Boudin and Cajun Meats on East Kings Hwy is good.
Lasyone's Meat Pie Restaurant in Natchitoches ( 1 hour south of Shreveport) is good.
Grayson's Barbeque in Clarence, La about 1.5 hours south of Shreveport is good. ( 30 min. east of Natchitoches LA)

PM me and if you bring your guns and want to shoot a little, I can probably accommodate you.
