Greetings,
Planning a spring break vacation to Biloxi Gulfport area in early march.  Looking for any insight from hometown forum folks so this yankee family can make it memorable.  kids are ages 17 / 15 /11
Here's what we plan on doing so far.  We'll be there for about a week.
-Going over to Mobile to see USS Alabama
-spending time on beach in the area
-cruise to see sea life in the Gulf
-Ferry out to Ship Island
-Eating at a Waffle House

Is any sportfishing seasons in the gulf open at this time?
Do the coasties wear shorts during early march or pants and short sleeves?
Is the coast always windy?

thanks

I was wearing shorts yesterday. Then we had a cold snap.

Lots of fishing options, i would just start shopping for charters. Inshore trout fishing is probably best bet.

"Eating at a Waffle House?"
Never considered Waffle House as haute cuisine but to each his own.

Thanks for the replies.
Waffle house is now pop culture or whatever you want to call it.  My older boys want to see what all the ruckus is about.

Found some info on Jefferson Davis museum.  Worth a stop?

Thanks again

The Jeff Davis museum is worth about half a day. About an hour north at Camp Shelby there is a very good museum.

There is also the MS Aquarium in Gulfport.

I love some Waffle House, If you want a good example of Gulf Coast food I would suggest "The White Cap" But there are lots of good places to eat here.

Can't begin to list all the places to eat down there. White Pillars is good, might be a little fancy though.

Check out Ocean Springs as well.

And as far as how to dress, who knows. This past Sunday morning I was in shorts and flip flops insulating my hosebibs for the snow we got at 5pm.

we were think about fort meyers area but the spring training games we wanted to go to were sold out.  Figured we were close enough to alabama.  Also found some negative stuff on web about MS beaches, at least warmer than it is up here.  thanks for the heads up though.
We went to virginia beach just before the pandemic it was great even though water was cold and beaches were so so, but at least it's the ocean and warmer weather.

You said you were going to take the Ship Island Ferry.  The beaches at Ship Island are much nicer than along highway 90.

People that compare our beaches to the various ones east of us fail to realize that when you are talking about those beaches you are thinking of a barrier island.  Here, our barrier islands are miles off shore.

Ship Island beaches are primo.  Especially south side.  Good shark fishing on west end. Spent many a weekend out there in my youth.  Hit the Long Beach Waffle House.  As previously mentioned, the Gulfport Aquarium is a great visit.  Biloxi Seafood museum is cool little visit about 15 miles east of the Gpt Aquarium.  And the Casinos may peak your interest.  Literally tons of local restaurants to visit if that is your flair.

I found visiting Beauvoir fascinating, but that was years and a few hurricanes ago. It might be interesting to see the place now.

There are tons of great restaurants, casinos, and museums.

I moved away before the aquarium got stood up in Gulfport so can't vouch for that one.

The beach is pretty much no bueno unless you like walking in the sand. The water is trash but Ship island is nice on the south side. Watch for rip tides, seems like every year somebody gets dragged out of one

Thanks again for the replies.  Sounds like well be flying down instead of driving so that's a plus.
I'll have to google fu riptide photos so the kids know what to look for.  We plan on doing more wading than anything.

Why is the water "trash" along the gulf port /biloxi area?

Front beach (The inhabited one) is an estuary with very little tidal movement. Our water has lots of detritus. That makes in productive during good times, but it ain't a pretty Florida beach.

Ship Island compares to the barrier islands of west Florida.

The Gulf Stream does not flow right up to the beaches on the Mississippi coast. Off shore barrier islands keep it from doing so.

So the water between those barrier islands and the beach is stagnant, nasty shallow water.

The oil spill didn't help any. It made the water worse. You still see some crap from the oil spill in the water.

The beaches are nice, but don't plan on getting in the water.

ETA: The aquarium in Gulfport is OK but EXPENSIVE.

Ship Island has not been restored after the last hurricane I have been told.

For some reason, from what I’ve seen, the Waffle Houses are  not as plentiful up north like they are here. My daughter and SIL live in upstate NY, mostly there are local owned “diners” as they call them.

Not sure the Ship Island ferry will be running, but definitely book at least a 1/2 day fishing charter with a local guide like Sonny Schindler over in Pass Christian. The local grub is all OK...Shaggys, The Blind Tiger, Bacchus in the Pass , White Cap etc. . If you are hankering for a good steak go check out this new place in Downtown Gulfport called Sully's...This place is really good!!! As far as the beach....It is a perfectly fine beach, are there better, sure, but ours is just fine; bring a chair and a cooler and enjoy a few brews and watch the sunset. Enjoy your stay and thanks for visiting!!

Make sure you grab some barbeque from The Shed.  Exit 57 off I-10.

Well looking forward to heading down.  Currently freezing rain in our neck of the woods so anything warmer is definitely better.    Thanks again for all the info.  I'll post a little debrief when we get back

Beautiful day today

Well we made it back in one piece.  Weather was decent three of the four days.  Of course our boat trip to Ship island got canceled due to weather.  Apparently 52 degrees and a strong north wind is too much for the ferry.  And our shrimping boat tour got canceled because the boat was still waiting for Coast Guard Approval :(

Beach was nice.  Hotel had great view.  Great shelling on Dauphin Island.  Saw a gator in the wild and many lizards in at gulf Islands visitor center and rec area.  Alabama and SS Drum were awesome too.

We went to the white cap and the Shed.  When we pulled into the shed, my spousal unit said "We are not eating here"  My three boys are "Come on mom it can't be that bad."  Food and atmosphere was great.  I think I saw a youtuber there.  Joel the long range scope guy I remember from TFBtv, or at least his doppelganger.  Didn't ask, he had family with him.

Great time, Thanks again for the help

EDIT:  What are all the green square and orange triangles with numbers in various areas.  Noticed several on 188 down to Dauphin and spotted a few in Biloxi?
