I am in Iowa for the weekend.  Drove across the entire state from MO to MN, and I gotta say it's under rated. Looks like God's country to me, the people are super friendly, every community I have passed through was very well maintained and you all have far fewer meth heads than the Ozarks.

I moved here from west / central Illinois 6 years ago. I like it.

Its not exciting, its not a place people go on vacation, its not a place that gets much national press....but it is a damn good place to live and work.

I might start coming the first weekend of September every year. Think I might go checkout the far western part of the state Monday.

Im un in the western chunk.  If you get a chance to run down the loess hills national scenic byway there are lots of pretty spots as well as the western skies scenic byway.  The original lincoln highway cuts diagonally through wester/southwest iowa and it sure doesn't feel like the dead flat areas of nebraska and kansas that people associate with boring old Iowa.

The problem is nowhere to shoot long range.  Also, you have to order sushi meat and fab your own sushi.  You can find steak and cheese curds, however.

Not true. I picked up some gas station sushi from a Kum and Go yesterday. It wasn't very good, but I don't think I died.

not at all true in the large cities -- cedar rapids here, and within a 10 minute radius I could be at any of 5 different real sushi restaurants.
And that's not counting  the takeout places like target or grocery stores with it ready to go.
