Howdy Michigan folk. I’ll be traveling with family to visit the Ford compound and surrounding areas for about a week in September. What would you recommend for things to do outside of the museum and immediate vicinity?

Any killer food options or other places to see or avoid? I’ve not spent any time in that area previously, so this will all be virgin territory for me.

Thanks for the tips.

Hitsville USA/The Mowtown Museum is worth a few hours.

Maybe check out the Detroit Institue of Arts?

Thanks to you both. I am looking forward to the cooler temps and a nice Italian meal might just be the ticket.

Any other input?

Giovanni's is in Detroit if that scares you. It's like 4 minutes from my house.

I should add there isn't much left in the neighborhood Giovanni's is in. There are more businesses than houses there.

In case you need the beetus...

If you go there, try the Turkish coffee and any of their deserts. I now understand why the beetus is so prominent in the middle east.

The Henry Ford Museum is a whole day, Greenfield Village (right next door) is also a whole day.  Fairlane (Henry Ford's home) is neat to walk around.  (All next to the FoMoCo compound) The Ford Piquette Ave. plant is another car museum. The Renaissance Center used to be open to walk on the first level, not sure of the current status (The GM headquarters).  Fort Wayne is a War of 1812 era till WWII fort.  Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH is huge amusement park (2hrs from Dearborn).

Downtown is OK safety wise, then avoid it until the suburbs.  Basically think of it as a big target, with anything outside of the 10 ring being a no-go until you go scoreless.

Thanks again. We will likely avoid Detroit proper unless we have a specific destination and exit plan.

This place is about the best Lebanese restaurant on a town full of Lebanese restaurants: https://www.yelp.com/biz/al-ameer-dearborn
It's also on the same street as the Shatila bakery above.

Excellent Thai places: http://www.bangkok96restaurant.com/   (they did the food for Gran Torino ) and https://orderluethaicafe.com/
Go around 1.  Both are crowded around lunch time.

Definitely go to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The cars alone are worth the price of admission. The model T rides in greenfield village are alot of fun too.

ARFCOMMER Borat’s BBQ restaurant is called Nikola’s, it’s in Southfield…. He’s been runner-up for best BBQ in Detroit for a couple of years.

The Detroit Zoo is worth seeing…

Plenty of Cider mills on the outskirts of the metro area to go grab fresh donuts and cider

Indoor skydiving in Novi

Toledo isn’t far for a quick trip downtown

Windsor, Canada isn’t far if you have a passport and are clot-shotted.

What would I recommend? Not going to little Iraq.

Thanks for all the advice. We were there for the Old Car Show as well as the Ford museum and Greenfield. We ate Giovannis, Shatila, and a number of other places that were good. I was surprised by Buddy’s Pizza, man that was good!

One afternoon was spent around downtown. Visiting the Piquette Ave Ford factory was actually quite amazing. Edsel Ford’s residence was also quite cool, although we didn’t get inside.

I’d call it a great place to visit, especially since TX and MI are reciprocal for carry. The roads and some of the neighborhoods were shitty, but that’s the case in any metro anywhere.

Take care and let me know if any of you are around Cen TX. I’d be happy to offer suggestions.
