I’m going to be vacationing in Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.  Can I take my AR pistol and 30rd mags?

I’m an Indiana resident with Indiana lifetime handgun license.

You could even bring NFA items here if you wanted. You're fine with an AR pistol.

Thank you.  I read something about 20 round and greater capacity handguns so I wasn’t sure.

Sounds like VA is a free state (same as IN).

My AR pistol has an adjustable brace and could (if you replace the flash suppressor with suppressor ready FS) fit that definition.

Just making sure I’m not in some gray area where “constructive intent” could be applied.

I’ll be in Virginia Beach and maybe Cheasapeak which are specifically mentioned.

NM … doesn’t apply to permit holders.

That website is misleading. The restriction only applies to weapons being openly or concealed carry by people without a permit.

This.

If you have an Indiana permit and you're over 21, you should be good-to-go with an AR pistol and any standard capacity mags.

Just curious. It seems to me that a small pocket pistol makes more sense. VA is pretty safe, so I don't see the reason for lugging around an AR pistol when there are so many other options.

The Dumbs are working on it.
We now have required mandatory background checks for ALL
gun  sales, even between private parties.

Since the State Police sand FFL run the checks things have gotten sort of screwed up.

While an AR pistol is generally considered a pistol in Virginia, asking a random LEO to understand it is
NOT a rifle is probably pushing things.
You cannot conceal a rifle. Period.
It is a concealed HANDGUN permit.
Handguns only.

I had an encounter a few months ago with a deputy Sheriff that did not realize that a gun
"secured in a closed compartment in a vehicle is NOT "a concealed handgun", and no permit
is required.
The compartment does not have to be locked, just closed.
So glove box or console no longer requires a CHP.

At least he did not get agitated and listened.
I am reasonably sure he called in, and someone told him he was out of line.
He even reduced the ticket from speeding ten over over to 'disobeying a high way sign'
70 in a 60 area saving me $30 on the fine.
There are plenty of rural highways in Virginia that are 60 and patrolled by local sheriffs.

We left on good enough terms he asked me what kind of gun I was carrying.
I relied "1991A1 Compact" and he said the sheriff makes them carry revolvers in anything over .38 caliber.

The state police have been under orders
If I go 75 they do not even leave their parking spot. For may years for no tickets under 10 over on the interstates.

I am not used to having a highway posted that high that is patrolled by other than State Police.
I hold it to 5 over now, and if the peed limit is under 40 I rarely go over at all.
I live in a small town that is posted at 25 for the most part.
It might go up to 45 outside town limits.
I am rarely in that much of a rush anymore since I an retired on disability.

I would note that the State Police routinely drive 10 over everywhere for the most part.
Part of I-66 nearby is posted at 65 MPH.
