It got really dirty.  Lots of fun, did about 80kms in back country by Sedona.

Going up a local road here today called Schenbly Hill.  It ought to be a challenge, it is about 11 miles and alot of it is wash outs and deadfalls.   There is one small section that has a 200 foot drop off the drivers side.

Guy I used to work with had the "radio van" version.  Hard top and sides with seats and wooden benches in the back.  Was very cool.

Open is not quite the word for it.  It is passable, but you need some real ground clearance.  Took 3 hours to do the 11 miles.  Pretty spectacular views at various points.

I wanted the Radio van version myself, as the plan is to have it converted into a camper for the dog and wife and I.  The only thing that quashed that was that it was 4 inches higher than the troop carrier version, which meant it was 1 inch too tall to fit in the garage space I have.

So we will work with the soft top version, which doesn't seem to be a problem really, the bed platform will fit in jsut fine with lots of storage underneath.

My wife is a bit of a girly-girl and the idea of roughing it for her, both attracts her and repels her.  She enjoys better hotels over tarantulas crawling up the sides of the truck.

For ‘dreamers’...would it be politie to ask what you’ve done to it, and cost ?

The extent of my mods so far has een replacing the stock headlights with LED bulbs, and that has been great.   I am pulling out the Rev Limiter, as that is a recommended Mod.

I have spent a weekend greasing and lubricating all the various points.  And that was fun.

Total into it so far is about 22k, but I bought stupidly expensive.  In retropsect, there are vehicles in just as good shape with more options for easily half that price, even local to me.  I was in a rush and bought stupid.

What's top speed of that? How's the towing capabilities? Parts availability? Been looking for something that has no computerized crap in it, but can go anywhere I want to go. That thing looks cool as hell!

Top speed is about 50mph, towing, it has front and rear towing capability, I don't know what the limits are, but it is some stupid high number.  No computers at all.  Can not get it stuck, I am still learning the individual locking levers in the cab, the approach angle is stupendous, I drove it up the side of my garage wall to make it easier to work on the portal axles.  I never did that before with any other vehicle.

Engine is air cooled and from reading the shop manual on it, it appears to be about as easy to work on as a volkswagen engine.   Parts are not particularly cheap, but they appear to be plentiful.  They are still using these things in Europe.

There are a few excellent examples being sold in the phoenix area (Yuma as well), pretty cheap - in the 11 to 15k range, for excellent, well maintained trucks.

Fun vehicle for sure. They make a 6 wheel version as well. Drive power can be selected for any or all axles on demand and they have ridiculous ground clearance. Only drawback is top speed & gas mileage.

Top speed is embarrassing, especially on the highway.  Gas mileage I don't really worry about.  I ahve extra gas tanks.

I couldn't fit the 6 wheel version in my garage, so it was a non-starter.

That seems like a bit of a steal all-around for about $20k or less. Especially considering what people pay for mini off-road capable trailers that can even just fit a small bed/etc. I may be looking into one of these now...

Only if you open the top, cover yourself in ice water and drive as fast as the beast will go.

AR-Ryan lives in the valley of ungodly heat, that would be a real show stopper for me. Thankfully living in Prescott avoids most of that.

Just ordered an electronic ignition for the pinz.  Hoping to smooth out the engine and maybe quiet it down a bit.

Thank you for posting this, very cool project. I would certainly enjoy updates when you start the camper conversion.
