There is a potential job there (emphasis on potential right now) for me.

Can you guys tell me about the area?  I am familiar with small towns and some of the pros and cons that come with living in a rural area like that.  I grew up in a place with more cows than people.

I am originally from rural Central Pennsylvania, so don't worry, I will be adding to your conservative side, and my family will be offsetting a few Californians.  My wife and I have two young children, so info about schools and recreational activities (for the young ones) would be appreciated.

We currently live in Texas, and I for one, would love the cold weather.

Judging by the number of views, the entire population of Wyoming has seen this post, but no one has ever made it there.

Been there and around there my whole life, crazy busy with crappy tourist from all over trying to be mountain men cowboys all summer. Winters are 10 to -40 and windy can have a whole winter with no snow, or 8 feet of snow it just depends on the year. I wouldn't say small town because for Wyoming any town over 5000 and having a walmart is pretty good size. If you like outdoor and beautiful mountains just out you back door it is a great place. We fly planes, snowboard, hike, rock climb, shoot, you name it... but the climate is a acquired taste. sadly it is getting more yuppy every year with the califruties and coloradans moving in so sadly it is changing slowly. But this is one mans opinion hope it helps.. sorry for the crappy grammar and spelling typed this quick haha...

Thanks for the info. It seems like a place that I'd love. It's pretty well insulated from the ridiculousness of the outside world. I'm not even worried about tourist season.

And if the Yellowstone caldera blows, we won't even have time to suffer.

Many people commute back and forth between Cody and Powell.

Very, very different communities.  Lots of wealth and all that goes with it in Cody.  It is not isolated, or insulated.

Real estate is outlandishly expensive compared to other places in the Basin.

Schools are better in Powell.

As Sparks said, the weather will be your challenge, although Cody has slightly better winters than Powell.    They get the south winds and can be 10 degrees warmer compared to Powell.  It's crazy how that works.

Wind.  Wind.  Wind.  Cody has a lot of it.

Thanks!  Great info.  I didn't realize that Cody was so wealthy.  The median income looked pretty low, but if I gather correctly, a bunch of leftist imported wealth?

Well, if Powell has some great art and sculpture schools, that may swing it.

I am not too worried about the weather, at least for me.  The wife may complain about it, but the only thing that she needs is a big soaking tub with a tankless hot water heater.

Am I correct in assuming that most trips for goods that are not available in town (Cody or Powell) are to Billings?

Cody isn't Jackson, yet, but there are many, many transplants.  The attitudes of many of those folks can be very cosmopolitan.

Both my son's got phenomenal educations in Powell.  My teaching neighbor drives over from Cody, and his daughter now goes to H.S. in Powell.  He's says it's a much better school system.

Billings is about 1.5hrs away.....maybe a bit less depending on traffic.  Costco, Home Depot,  Lowe's are all in Billings, along with just about everything else.

Good new Black rifle gun store in Cody, across from Walmart.   If you are into motorcycles, 4 wheelers, ect, Mountain Valley is the place to go in Cody.

Cody was my home for 6 wonderful years. Great place to call home like Sparks and Guns said, everything they said is completely accurate.
If my job didn't evaporate I would still call Cody home.

I'm a transplant from southern Wyoming, in Powell with Guns and Sparks.  Cody is a tourist town, summers are full of sillyness but it's one small con with a lot of pros.  The Billings drive isn't bad although the fam and I don't do that very much.  Our shopping trips are to Cody, it has everything a tourist may want to lots of clothing, merchandise, gun shops and restaurants.

I love this place, I'll never leave.

Been here a few months. Transplanted from the socialist republic of Kolorado.

Pace of life is a little mellower than the rat race of Colorado springs and Denver.

Not finding libtards in abundance here and that is a good thing. I can go hike to my heart's content and the places are close by. Or the hour trip to Yellowstone and that will take me years to do em all.

People have a hard time driving I have seen. Making right turns from the fast lane, driving 20 mph under the speed limit. Tossing beer a  bottle out of window when swerving between lanes... A metric buttload of deer that cross the road all over, even in town. Heck, I have a herd of about 16 that camp out in my back property and chill on my back deck.

I have noticed a lot of the kitchen crews from some of the eateries seem to like getting new mug shots. But some places have decent chow.

Class III place here with a kiosk.

Great people that hate libtards here. I am loving it. Was informed that there is some law passed where you can build things and the feds get the finger. I need to read it over a few more times b4 I go pick up a 3 axis.

The part of drunk drivers and the asses that throw trash out their trucks? I detest drunk drivers.
The part of the deer? I love the deer.

Didn't place much attention to the tag as I paid more attention to their wanderings over the lanes on the Southfork. I slow down giving them plenty of room and let them ruin their fender on a deer or someone's mail box.

I believe the ones making right hand turns from the left lane are the tourists.

Powell does have the better schools and the JuCo as well.  There is a 5 lane highway between them now so it's a half hour or less to go either way.  Cody has better restaurants and bars if you or the SO is into that scene.  NW WY has more than you can see in one lifetime.
