The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain are coming to Coos Bay in May, offering tours and sailing opportunities.
The Lady Washington has appeared in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Trek: Generations” and ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” among other TV and film appearances.
The ships will dock at the city dock, Anderson Avenue and South Bayshore Drive, May 1-5 and will offer educational programs, vessel tours and public sailing trips as well as private charter.
The educational nonprofit Grays Harbor Historical Seaport operates the ships, which visit over 30 West Coast communities each year. Coos Bay Boat Building Center is the local host organization and a sponsor of Maritime Legacy Days in Coos Bay.
The wooden-hulled Lady Washington was built in 1989 in Historical Seaport’s home port of Aberdeen, Wash., to commemorate the centennial of Washington’s statehood. It is a replica of the 18th century vessel of the same name which was the first American ship to make landfall on the West Coast, according to a Historical Seaport news release.
The steel-hulled Hawaiian Chieftain was built in 1988 in Lahaina, Hawaii. It’s designed after the packet traders of mid-1800s New England.
Schools may reserve a tall ship maritime heritage field trip May 1-3. On weekends, the tall ships are open to the public for a variety of ticketed trips. Tours, which take place aboard the tall ships as they are docked in port, are Friday through Sunday with a $5 suggested donation. Hawaiian Chieftain also may be chartered for private events.
