IMHO, there is one part of SYG that churches do need, and that is the immunity from lawsuits if someone is shot at a church while committing a crime.

My understanding, and from what I have been told, is that the way it is now, if  the volunteer church security team member or a member of the church has use justifiable lethal force, there is nothing that would prevent that person or their family from filing a civil suit against the church, which is similar to the way it was for homeowners before SYG.  Now, this being Alabama, the chances of a jury finding for the plantiff is low, but it would cost the church a lot of money in legal fees.  And with the budgets of most churches, it would bankrupt the church.
