Have they gone to a durable picture ID?
My last was a 5 year paper permit, and it just about disintegrated even after I laminated it.

Sure have. Much better than the paper and much better than jefferson county permits.

I renewed by mail (5 year) and mine arrived with my current driver license photo in place. They pulled straight from the state DL file obviously.

The ink on the card can bleed easily if you're not careful. I tried to use Goof Off to get the tacky stuff that held it to the letter and it ended up almost taking off the info on the back of the card. So just an fyi. Don't go heavy handed on Goof Off.

The permit is issued by the state, but is good throughout the state.

The permit is issued by the local county sheriff. The Alabama Secretary of State is the one who led the effort to get the sheriffs to issue the same basic permit design.

Until that happened each sheriff had a different format of the permit.

Do you have to get the permit from the county that you live in? Calhoun county costs twice as much as Marshall county the last time I checked.

Mine is on plain old paper. I took it into a UPS store, and they laminated it for about two bucks.

We are Shall Issue. If a sheriff rejects an application the person can appeal to a local judge. iirc it's a 30 day deal.

Thanks, since I have had a Florida permit since 1987, I don't think I should have a problem.

Thanks, since I have had a Florida permit since 1987, I don't think I should have a problem.

A buddy of mine got temporary denied because of a DV arrest from the 90's. Charges were dismissed. He had to bring proof dismissal to the sheriff's office.

Which I thought was odd because if he was convicted it would have shown in the background check.
