if I read that right, no warrant needed and they sang like a parakeet. fra

I just got told this was all happening while I moved and I missed it. Sick to my stomach. Never thought they would roll "to save money".

Come back with a warrant is the mantra I teach constantly and consistently. Fra

It's looking like they were backed into a corner. I get the angst, but I'm not sure what they could have done under the circumstances. NYS has deeper pockets, & the feds aren't going to step in & stop it.

Personally, I wish gun makers would stop selling to ban state governments, no nookie for you style.

Wouldn't telling them to come back with a warrant be the correct first step?

This state would give NYS a wide legal berth to give RA the good 'n hard treatment.

What makes you think they didn't have warrants?

The lawsuit is bullshit but all customer info was going to be released during discovery anyway. The settlement changes nothing. I am surprised Rainier even sold to people in NY to start with.

I'd probably settle with New York as well rather than burn several million dollars on legal fees and potentially bankrupt myself, to get the same result.

If you live in New York and you're dumb enough to buy gun parts online, your privacy was gone long ago.

How do you suggest they buy their gun parts?  Oh yeah I forgot, Wal-marts in NY have a special section for gun parts, my bad.

Have you not bought parts online?  If not and you think the people who buy parts online are the outlier then explain how Brownell's stays in business

What would you have done?

How much money would you burn in lawsuits if you were Rainier Arms and know that most likely you will loose?

I have bought from John who owns Rainier since before they were a company (~15 plus years).  He's a good dude with high integrity.
Many successful businesses have targets on them and its inevitable they will get sued.  I dont know if RA did anything wrong based on my reading of the article.
John is not some sell out like Marty Daniels!

Never mind- I read the GD.  Looks like Rainier sold to NY after a law passed.  I don't know if it was a mistake with so many changing laws to keep track of or willful sales.

I stand by my statement on Johns integrity.  Not only is he responsible for his family's well being, he probably has 50 plus employees who count on him to run a profitable business so they can take care of their families.

The GD thread has a lot of people who don't own businesses, haven't dealt with lawyers, understand the legal process or have been sued.
In the end, no matter how much RA fought, they would have burnt piles of cash on lawyers and still lost.  The info would have been obtained.  That's the reality of the situation.

Look at ADCO getting sued for something that is BS.  He's burning piles of cash, its probably affecting his personal financial well being, business financial well being and mental health.

There are lots of really great folks on both sides of the aisle, I'm sure he's one of them.

But his choices were to give it up willingly and piss off/ lose a large portion of your customers

OR

Tell NY to get a warrant

He made his choice. Regardless of all the above I'll bet he lost enough customers to lose workers of not the entire business. We all know gun guys have long memories. I've still not bought anything s&w and that's been 25 years.

I wish him luck.

Perhaps you are unclear on how lawsuits operate, but New York effectively had a warrant. They had a discovery order forcing RA to give over all their customer data.

There was nothing shared beyond information that was coming out eventually during discovery in the State case, and those disclosures were inevitable.

How gun owners in New York deal with their tyrannical government isn't really my problem. but perhaps they should exercise some discretion if they don't want said tyrannical government looking into their affairs?

Burner credit cards. Secured email. VPN. Mail drops. Family in other states. It's not rocket science.
