God forbid.

But I can't help but wonder, 'Would we do any better?'

Do our teachers close and lock doors?
Would our police aggressively move to stop the shooter?
Would our police get the facts out quickly, and transparently?

I hope we don't have to find out. And I hope the right people are asking those questions.

My wife is a teacher.

Schools are locked as are classrooms.

I am the father of a kindergarten teacher here in SC...although they call it K- something now... the only advantage my daughter would have is that she is my daughter and she would not go quietly into the night, meaning she would protect her kids at all cost, but would go on the offensive.
as a father I do fear for this... I would like to see some double door type system, like a lockdown bullet proof room to enter a school... I think that is do able.

Most HS already have this via locked doors and the only way in is via the office.

Elementary and Middle schools aren’t all  like this.

Nope.
Nope.
Nope.
And, Nope.

The TX thing is unfolding in a way that reminds me of a third world nation, or Richland County.  I've not had time to watch whether those in power in TX have circled the wagons for high fives, pats on the back for waiting over an hour, a circle jerk, and protecting the dental plan.

I can tell you that the big three state agencies and FLETC train to push when confronted with an active threat. Without discussing specific tactics, I’ll say that they are trained that the first priority is to stop the shooter, no further instructions needed.

What happened in Texas and in Florida is both embarrassing and infuriating.

For several years, the Governor’s Executive Budget has called to put a resource officer in every school. (That assumes that those officers would actually be useful.)

The resource officer is useful, but their prior performance against rifle armed killers is not good. Some other problems include too much area to patrol and too many uncontrolled doors. If the lawmakers want to do something, then vote funds to bring all schools up to a security level that will defeat casual entry by murderers. The media indicated that the Texas shooter entered through a door propped open by a chair. Training school employees to take security seriously will be a major issue.

more than one armed response is needed.  not wait for armed people to show up, and take their sweet time to do something.

Some single SRO and teachers and admins have stopped shootings, with low or no injuries.  Sometimes you get people like Texas and Florida where they are scared or not there at the time, or have bosses that should not be boss.

layered security is needed , along with armed security of some type.  multiple not just one or two that can be singled out at the start. go to the school board meetings, talking to the principals etc.

SC is one of the leading states in Alerrt training and grant usage....we go out and train other states

This state is more prepared than most. Teachers leaving doors open is a bigger problem than if the police will respond

How does SC rank on removing psycho and/or thuglife minors from free society?

Judging by the thugling who cost me two neighbors in 6 years, not too good.  Richland County catch-and-release.  DJJ throwing softballs when they're on the inside.  "Don't stigmatize mental illness."  "Dew it for the po' misunderstood chirrens."  Keep them in the school systems to pump up enrollment and get that sweet, sweet taxpayer per-student gravy to build more lavish facilities and employ more non-classroom admin overhead.

A member of my Lodge recently left employment Richland County District 2.  He tells lots of horror stories about the district. He said that while it's true that there were 3 guns reported on Blythewood High campus this semester, he knows of at least 5 other instances that were not reported.  In regards to security, he said that the janitors in nearly every school leave the doors closest to the dumpsters unlocked all day so they don't have to carry the keys around.  He said that there are broken door locks on several doors at several schools that don't get repaired because the staff likes to come and go through the doors during the day. His daughter is now at the Governor's School.  He told me that if there was any way to afford private school that I should get my daughter out while we could. The superintendent for the district recently sent around a letter saying he would not put metal detectors in the schools.

I'm touring Richard Winn, Ben Lippen, Grace Community, and Gray Collegiate this week and next.  My daughter is not going back to Richland County District 2.

This is pretty close to true.....the school admins try to hude stuff as the more incidents affect their budgets

Janitors...and teachers....leave doors propped or unlocked....because they are flat out lazy

Standards are in place to make schools hardened....its the fact they are not followed....by the faculty that is the problem

All well and good, but then at the end of the day, all the kids are either waiting outside in a car rider line or getting onto busses. Both huge targets imho. Murderers will always find a way and thats the sad truth.

They don't wait outside now in Richland 2 because of 'Rona.  They have to wait inside.

My wife teaches in the upstate.  I can tell you alot of the times it is the teachers.

Her doors at her school automatically close/lock.  They require a code or fob to gain entry.  Only door that is open are the ones that go into the front office (near SRO office as well).

However when the teachers prop the doors open

She said this is pretty common and shes a stickler about it.  There are a good many safeguards in place, but they have to be followed.  Administation needs to crack down on this.

SRO position in schools need to stop being a dumping ground for officers put out to pasture or being punished. Officers need to be rotated from the ranks on a regular basis.

In 2002 a SRO (Sumter PD) was fired from his position at Chestnut Oaks Middle School (and fired from the agency) for using the school-provided computer in the SRO office for downloading porn. Within a couple of months his replacement was fired for doing the exact same thing. WTFFF?

This  /\    ...  rotation even for a few shift hours would work... problem is they will complain that the students don't really get to know the RO...

Can't speak for the teachers... I'm not impressed with a lot of the new ones. As to police, I can honestly say they'd go through the door and FUCK any orders to the contrary. SC has a lot of good cops left.
