Culture shock - your kids are in for it - at a critical time in their lives.
Could you wait until HS graduation? Florida is on a severe downward spiral regarding immigration, 2nd A rights, etc... The schools should be pretty good in most of the space coast, although since my baby is 26 yo, my info is dated. The actual day to day living is awesome if you like outdoor/water based activities. Be aware of the sunburn threat! Treat every body of water as if there are alligators, snakes and sharks in them, because there are! Floridians do most things slow, but driving ain’t one of them, slower traffic stay right. Cary everywhere you can. |

I would find Tampa pretty livable. If seeking a small-town feel, check out Thonotosassa.

I'd consider coming for a vacation in the summer months before I just up and relocated. You say you want warmer. Temps in the 90s with 90% humidity every day for months are what you'll get. I'm a lifelong Floridian and I'm just as sick of the heat as you are of the cold.

My kids are going to stay with my brother in Cocoa Beach next month and have a run through space camp. He and his wife are great people but have little to no experience with kids/teenagers. They have been there just over a year.
We spent some time in the keys and on Bimini before we had kids. From what Google maps shows Rockledge looks semirural. But I also see lots of yards with junk piled up. One of the job options was near a military base in the pan handle and crime stats were an eye opener! Rape cases were 120 percent of the national norm. That alone scared me off!! |

It is absolutely wonderful, just like it looks in Disney commercials. Every single person here really has a perma-smile like that, even the old people who should look grumpy. Check out Mims in north Brevard, north of Titusville. Very proud country attitude there, trucks, hunters, rednecks, nice country living.
In the south, Grant/ Valkeria, very rural, Rockledge is crowded and shares a border with shithole Cocoa. Avoid Port 0’John errr Port St. John, Palm Bay like the plague. Merritt Island is mostly urban. Cocoa sucks. Titusville is old, and not country. Hope you love heat and humidity. |

I have friends who live in Viera. Seems nice, between Cocoa and Titusville. I live about 45mins north, in south east Volusia. I'd live in Titusville before Rockledge.

I'm a Florida native... with that said, I'm 57 now and really getting tired of the heat and humidity. The humidity is starting to really make me want to leave Florida. I can't in reality, but I dream about it.
I'm fairly settled here in central FL for now but would love to relocate up to the panhandle as already mentioned. It's still hot but to me it seems the humidity is slightly less and the weather gets colder for sure, which is a nice break after months of sweltering heat. Can you imagine 80 degrees at 7am? Like the cold, the heat and humidity gets old. Crowded... Ocala and south is just plain crowded. Up north seems a little more spread out. Our interstates in central and south Florida stay crowded more often than not. There's just A LOT of people crammed into the central and southern part of the state it seems. But... we do need more like-minded folks... so I say welcome. |

Crazy cause Montana is the first place I'm looking in 10yrs when I'm done with my dept. Born and raise in FL and it is no longer the state it was and why it was great. I fully suspect it will be a liberal cesspool like CA in a handful of years. We barely beat out a socialist for Gov by less than 1%. Now that the next election 1.4 mil felons will get a vote I firmly believe most of all counties and the state will go full dem/libtard in all offices. I would not suggest to anyone to move here.

Rural West coast is where I'm at and it's more like real life. Not nearly the cost of the lower West coast or most of the East coast. Most anything port Richey or lower is pricier and more and more on the trendy side of everything.

After reading all your different angles I still think us moving to the area is a good choice. My primary business has been on the downward spiral since the price of oil tanked several years ago and my secondary job has me all over the state in horrible weather conditions through the winter, natural gas compressor station mechanic. We need a major change in our lives.
Working on getting hired with a large tech company taking care of remote backup generators and my wife having health issues that are compounded by cold weather are the biggest motivation. Finding the safest area/schools is my biggest fear. I can acclimate and work wierd hours to beat the heat. The metal buildings the compressors are joused in suck with no shade and 100 degree days. We work at night during a big part of the summer. |

The old people in Brevard would drive me nuts. Also, none of those areas you mentioned are "big city." They are all pretty rural with a few shopping centers here and there. It's a nice mix.

If you want the best bang for your buck you will need to go to places you've never heard of. FL properties are some of the highest in the nation like CA. So if you have heard of that area already then prices will he higher just about automatically. If I was staying in the state i would be looking some where on the gulf side on the northern end of the state.

I live in the NE corner of FL, Fernandina Beach (on Amelia Island) and it’s hot in the summer, no hotter than where I came from, and seasonal and somewhat cold in the winter. We have great beaches good food and nice downtown. It’s not a bad ride to Jacksonville or St Johns for shopping. Yulee HS and a Fernandina Beach HS are quite Godfrey’s what I can tell. My youngest is finishing his freshman year at FSU.

Having lived all over and just moved back to Florida from Butte, MT myself... I'll warn you... it's HUMID here compared to Montana or Arizona!
Most Montana people I know head south to Arizona so they stay within that same type of climate. Myself, I'll be heading back to Montana to see my son this summer, then back down to Arizona for the long winter. It rains too much in Florida as well for my taste, I prefer a dryer climate, my old bones definitely can tell the difference. BE FOREWARNED... FLORIDA IS A CONCEALED ONLY CARRY STATE, NOT LIKE MONTANA WHERE YOU CAN OPEN CARRY AS MOST PEOPLE DO EVERYWHERE. Good luck on your move! |

Good luck to you OP. This montanan is looking to relocate to florida also. In fact I will be there in just a few weeks to check out some potential areas. The -40 and blowing snow stacking up to several feet has done me in. I have a great job here in Montana and I will miss Montana but the 7 month of winter and the blowing snow is too much. I figure the heat of the summer down there cant be any worse than the coldest months up here. Up here we stay inside as much as possible to stay warm , except when plowing snow and coyote hunting, but down there during the hottest part of the summer we will stay inside just the same and soak up the a/c.
