Fire Marshal rules barn fire injuring three, killing one as arson

MARTINSBURG -- A structure fire Sunday morning that injured four firefighters, resulting in the death of one, has been ruled an arson, according to a press release by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office.

Through an investigation on Sunday, the Fire Marshal‘s Office also connected that structure fire with another on the same road that occurred minutes prior.

One of those injured in the fire -- an airman with the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard -- died, according to a release from the West Virginia Air National Guard.

According to the press release from Baker Heights Fire Department, around 2 a.m. Sunday, Berkeley County dispatched Co. 60, Co. 80 and Medic 97 for a fire in the 3800 block of Charles Town Road. At roughly 2:02 a.m., assistance was requested from Co. 1 Martinsburg Fire Department and the West Virginia Air Guard 167th. Baker Heights established command on the call.

Around 2:34 a.m., a mayday was issued, and additional medic units were requested. Four firefighters were transported to Berkeley Medical Center for treatment as a result of the fire.

Officials said the name of the service member who died will be withheld for 24 hours while the closest of kin is notified.

"It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our service members overnight," an Air National Guard Facebook message and press release said. "The Airman was assisting in a mutal aid call for a fire with the 167th Fire Department and suffered a fatal injury while on the call."

The first structure fire occurred around 1:36 a.m., just 20 minutes before the one resulting in injury and death. The first fire happened at 7443 Charles Town Road, approximately three miles from the second, according to the fire marshal's release. The release said that the investigation determined both were intentionally set.

The fire marshal's release said the office and the West Virginia State Police continue to investigate and are seeking the help of anyone with information. Anyone with information should call the West Virginia Arson Hotline at 800-233-3473. There is a reward up to $5,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
