Is this the current thread, or is there one I passed over?  Says look out for new thread in HTF but I didn't see one.  Looks like the goal is to close the original and have one each for dismal and peninsula factions here.

Anyway, I got at least one guy interested in coming out on Saturday that I met at lobby day.  Are we doing one?   There's 3 total in that "group" other than me, two are definitely looking to get more active in organizing and training.  Haven't heard much from the third, but I think he is too, just a little more gun shy of strangers from the internet (if you're lurking, no offense bro :P)

Screw it, I'm calling this the official thread.  Hike planned tomorrow (2/22/20), 0900 @ 1200 Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, Chesapeake, VA.  Come on out and meet up with your local compatriots.  I've got 2, maybe 3 guys I met at lobby day coming and they are just as excited to network as the battle buddies.  Also made a contact about an hour north at the HB961 hearing that was interested in 'merging' or at least having joint exercises from time to time.  We can talk about that, but I feel like I've got to get a handle on our own house down here before leveraging that further.

Link to greater/general Battle Buddies thread and standards
I'd like to shoot for at least 'provisional' distance/pace wise, whether or not you pack the weight to qualify is up to individuals.  Anyone know a good smartphone tracking app?  Also note, if you're shooting for BB ratings, plates do NOT count for pack weight.  So I'll probably leave mine off this time.

edit to fix link

I haven't heard much out of the peninsula/newport news guys, but we do get both off the ground as separate "chapters", I'd really like to try to do somewhat regular meets between the two groups.  One more "btw", NOVA is hosting a big one in Manassas the following week: thread

How did the hike go?

Six miles in right at 2 hours.  3 of us due to a bunch of last-minute bailers with lame ass excuses like "I've got the flu" or "I pulled my back yesterday"

I had 35 pounds of dumbbells in a basic backpack and a rifle.  7 hours and a heat pack later my shoulders are still crying.  I really need a framed pack.  What does the hive recommend?

The Peninsula/Newport News and Dismal Swamp groups were split to distinct threads. I thought Sigs and Cider was going to do a new thread for the NN BB group, however he may have been looking for someone to take over ownership for that area.

You know how people in the area are about crossing the water so it made sense to have two groups threads. However we always wanted to ensure both groups linked up for shared hikes in the respective AO at some regular time (1x per month or something)

As far as I'm aware, the peninsula group never really got off the ground.  I've seen @SigsandCider posting a bunch so he hasn't vanished entirely, but I have yet to actually meet him in person.

It's about an equal drive for me to the Swamp location as up across the river and I'd be more than happy to go up there (or anywhere else really) for a meet or a hike.  PM me if you want.

I've been in self isolation since February. With my auto immune disease and compromised respiratory system, I've been sitting out the Wu Flu Boogaloo. If I catch it I'm most likely dead.

Once this shit is past I'll spin up a NN Park Group if one hasn't popped up already.

Bump for hike in the morning, 8:30 at a different part of Great Dismal Swamp.  If you're not in our text group and want to join, PM for details, it's about 10 minutes north of the 'normal' location in this thread.  I don't have the address/map point right now to post it here.

Winston-Salem is a bit more of a drive than Manassas, about 4.5 hours.  Probably a bit much to be back for work on Monday, but still posting for visibility.  AJ is a solid dude, tell him Klaus sent you.

I'd be interested in a venture into the Swamp.  It's an easy place to get lost if you venture off trail. Anyone interested in pushing it?

Agree more notice is beneficial. This one came together later Friday night, so it was shorter notice.

Expect the next hike is 2 weeks out - Sep. 19.  will post details here when confirmed.

The Swamp reference is to the Dismal Swamp trail and we walk the roadway.  Some from the group have walked a different location trailing into the swamp.

Yeah, I've done S&R training in the swamp.  When you go deep, transit is tough and everything looks the same, it definitely gives you a lot to think about.
