I did some digging into the New Mexico murder by weapon using the FBI national crime statistics.  Contrary to what the liberal media would like you to believe, there is no such thing as an “assault weapons” problem.  Not in NM, and not nationwide.

Looking at the chart below, for each year, there are two lines.  The first line is the number of murders by weapon as reported by the FBI.  The second row is the total number of murders for Handguns, Rifles (of any kind), and Shotguns.  This takes into account the number of firearms listed in the Unknown Firearm list.  What I did was take that number, and divide it up between Handguns, Rifles (of any kind), and Shotguns based on percentages.  For example, there are a total of 22 firearms murders where we know the firearm type.  Of that Handguns account for 20, or 91%, of the 22 firearms murders.  So, I took 91% of the 49 unknown murders (which comes out to 45) and added that to the original number of handgun murders to get the total projected murders committed with handguns for 2017.  Or 49 * 0.91 + 20 = 65 projected murders by handgun.

Keep in mind that in 2014, 118 people were killed by drunk driving, or by a drunk driver hitting them.
