I'm a recent transplant. Something I've experienced when buying stuff in Florida is that when I pay with cash, employees frequently make change by rounding the amount due up to the next higher dollar and just return bills. This is before tip.  Is this a thing in Florida???   (Flame suit on)

Never had that happen to me, but I've only been here 14 years.

A LOT of places down here have a sign saying they round up due to "coin shortage ".....

Lived here my whole life and never experienced that.  But I'd be OK with it.

Never had that happen to me and I've been here 40 years. Stop going to that place or complain to management.

We had a liquor store trying to pull that shit during the "great coin shortage", someone ended up filing a complaint. I'm talking if your item was $3.05 and you paid with a $5, they would give you a dollar back, they were seriously screwing people.

Never had that happen.  Did you say "I want to speak to the manager"?

I’ve had places (in several states, not just Florida) ask if I’d like to round up the change on my purchase as a donation. But I’ve never seen it happen on its own.

Thanks for the feedback.   Just coincidence I suppose?

Maybe you've got a big "out of towner" sticker still on your forehead!!

Moving forward, you could be proactive. If the item is $6.27, give them $7. 56 and watch the hilarity ensue.

Couple of gas stations around here will round down or up due to lack of coins.

Coins are worthless anyway.  Have you noticed they're all made out of tin now?  No silver or nickel.  What does that tell you about the real value of US currency?

Change is archaic and time consuming. They probably just keep it simple to make life easier when someone has audit it later.
The "Florida thing" behind this (actually a broader Southern thing) is keeping things simple.
Northerners pride themselves on creating complexity and making things harder for no reason.

That's a total waste of time that benefits no one.
