Where are you coming from?
Housing in Oregon in general is expensive. I mostly see the reservation side of it so crime is what i deal with. Lake Billy Chinook is great. Easy access to the mountains. Lots of outdoors activities. |

Bend here.
Madras has a lot of affordable housing and property with land. Schools suck. It was/still is considered a major hub for the 'drug highway' from MX. There is a lot of hard drug use and low income. It is too far from many of larger cities around here. Going to have a very limited amount of business access. |

Meh Madras IMHO is a shit hole. The land around it however can be pretty fruitful if a farmer. There is not much there in terms of well anything. Typical stores, markets etc etc. Rarely do I pass through and not see tweekers stumbling around. Same can be said for bend however. I'd come out and take a look around. If you do lmk and I'll make time to try and show you the sights. |

Hood River here. I moved back in 2012 after being gone for 8 years in the Coast Guard. It’s changed a lot since I’ve grown up here. Housing is expensive and gets worse in the summertime. There’s a lot to do year round. Hunting in the area isn’t the best but there’s opportunity. Fishing is great. Camping and hiking have been taken over by the proximity to Portland. It’s grown a lot but I still drive down the road and wave at people I grew up with. Feel free to ask anything else you think of. |

Raised my family in Hood River, 17 years.
Left back in 2011. Spent the next 10 years traveling to and from HR. Still travel to the area couple times a month. It's a beautiful place during peak seasons. All of them. The in between can be kinda gloomy IMHO. Not as much rain as the dark side but when it rains, it rains. Downtown is best avoided during the summer as the wind chasing crowd has one if the highest Karen to sprinter ratios around second only to Bend. Lots of tech in Hood River and nearby. Not so sure about other work at the moment. One thing that often gets over looked, sadly is the drug problems there. Cascade locks, HR, Bingen and the dalles have a higher then average rate of drug use. I've seen it first hand destroy many young and old lives. It's often swept underthe rug as to not tarnish thr image of the town. Just know it's there more then you've likely been told. Watched it go from kids smoking weed to kids shooting heroine under the bridge on the east end of town. As of a month ago, that is still the norm sadly. It also has a strange population surge. You get wind chasers, mostly Canadian lol, and also large influx of migrant workers coming to work then leaving in the fall. The town's population increases some ridiculous number then falls back to the locals during the winter. I've lived in downtown all the way up to Parkdale. Best advise I can give is find a place in thr upper valley. Living up there balances alot of the things that I personally don't like about Hood River. It is one of the most beautiful little Valley in the state. I've seen blues kids overhead and 80s, surrounded on all sides by clouds. Call to town and it's 40 and raining. Also when it's clear you always have one if thr best views of Mt Hood you can find. Good luck. |

Appreciate the insight everyone. I accepted a job there but turns out it's actually remote. I'll have opportunities to visit, hopefully in summer with my mountain bike
 Might think about relocating up there later on either way. Any good shooting areas for casual plinking or can shooting? 9mm handgun, 5.56 and .22 rifles? BLM land or established range? |

As far as quality of life it would be hard to go wrong with anywhere in the gorge. Portland is an easy drive for anything you need that you cannot get locally. The Dalles is a little further east and housing is a little more affordable than Hood River. Unlike Hood River County, Wasco County is very much a red county. There is also a lot more public land for shooting and you'll likely have it all to yourself. If you're into hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, skiing, etc it's all here. The Oregon coast is only a 3.5 hour drive on a bad day. Hot dry summers and cool dry winters (except this winter was pretty dang wet). |

I’m a gorge resident. Have lived on both sides. The Washington side is a better bet except for the gun laws (Oregon not far behind). Less (still plenty) of tourists from Portland. Stronger communities. But I just sold a property in Klickitat county, and will be turning my residence into a rental and leaving to the Mountain west within a year. Will come back to fish the Salmon runs. The hunting here has gone so far downhill in the past 15 years and I’m sick of all the tourists during the summer.
