Starting in Portland and heading towards Stowe doesn't leave you many options except driving up route 302 straight to VT It's like 5 hour trip and you're there.
 Not much to add, Good life market in Raymond on route 302 has good sandwiches, I'd recommend the godmother or the good life club. Positive pie in Hardwick VT has excellent pizza and good beer. |

Yep heading to vt from portland let's you do stuff in portland. Ain't nothing between there and white mountains in nh.

If it’s a clear day, the Mount Washington Auto road is worth the detour. I have introduced a lot of folks to that drive, none have been disappointed. Weekdays would be better to avoid crowds
