I may be looking to move to AZ with work in early 2021. With my job I'd have a lot of flexibility in choosing where to live around the state and I'd like to put myself close to the best and most convenient LR & ELR shooting spots.

What and where are the best places for LR & ELR shooting in AZ? I'm guessing most folks just go out in the desert for the most fun?

for NRA prone and F-class 1000 yd Long Range Ben Avery north phoenix  is one of the best ranges in the country.

these two groups run shoots there, check the sched's on the websites

all the above except Tucson are in the general phoenix area, Tucson is 3 hours south

desert is iffy

BLM & most USNF is open to shooting except during fire season, which this year was 4 months or so long. They also have closures in the areas infested with hikers or dirt bike riders.

state trust land hunting is OK but no target shooting

indian reservations are off limits except to tribal members and casino patrons.

National parks and military bases are even less welcoming.

some areas are a patchwork of private/public land which created headaches finding a place to shoot or hunt.

the above are each nearly 20% of the state. so you can find a place when there are no fire restrictions. but a lot of it is mountains, you can't shoot within 1/4 mile of an occupied structure without permission or across roads, so that makes it tough to find 1000+yds of flat land you can drive to put up a heavy steel target.
