Can you plate a trailer for less than the weight on the tag? I'm going to attempt to contact the BMV tomorrow, but my expectations are low.

Can you? Yes. Is it legal? Idk

Every time I got a new trailer the BMV asks what weight plate I want on it.

I have a friend that has a 12k lb car hauler plated for 3k.

It doesn't add much cost so I rather just plate it to the max the trailer can hold so I know I'm never going to be afoul of the law.

I actually did talk to the BMV, and you can plate it for whatever. If you plate in lower than what it can handle, and you overload it and get caught, you may be fined for being overweight.
