Earthquake Update: Wind gusts increasing, Large snow event for Sunday; Damage data collection

Update:
Weather:
Wind gusts continue to increase and will now extend into the evening.

-40-45mph in the Anchorage Bowl

-50-60mph in the Hillside area

Snow is definitely on its way. It should start falling tomorrow evening with the heaviest happening during the overnight hours. 4-6 inches are expected in the Anchorage Bowl and 8-12 inches for the Hillside. The snow should stop falling by the Monday morning rush hour. Municipal snow and road crews are prepared to deal with this snow event.

Transportation:
Glenn Highway Reminder: Start planning ahead for Monday if you commute to Anchorage from the Valley, Eklunta, Chugiak and Eagle River. Severe delays and detours will continue into next week. If you have an option to work from home, look into those plans now.

Schools:
Closed Monday and Tuesday; After-school activities cancelled.

Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, his public safety team, as well as Dr. Deena Bishop with the Anchorage School District, will be giving an update at 4:30 p.m.

Update 12:05 p.m.:
Weather:
Wind gusts will be an issue starting around Noon and expected to continue into the evening

-40-45mph in town

-50-60mph Hillside
Temperatures are expected to rise above 32 degrees creating slippery conditions with the potential of refreezing overnight.
Snow is forecasted for tomorrow late afternoon. 4-8 inches is expected. Plan ahead and check your surroundings.

Transportation:
Major road closures and delays will continue for the next several days. Stay off the roads unless necessary. Obey traffic laws, follow officers’ commands and move for emergency responders.

Merrill Field Airport: Tower is now operational

Shelters:

Water system: Fully operational; Quality good; Repairs continue; Precautionary boil advisory continues

Health Safety Tips:
Stick to your normal routines (including mealtimes, bedtimes)
Especially, if you have children, they will feel more safe and secure with structure and routine.
Carry out small, practical tasks and count each success.
Seek social connection and support. Share your experience and feelings.

How adults can help children
-Talk to children and teenagers about their feelings and how they are affected.
-Use simple honest answers.
-Be prepared to discuss the same details many times.
-Let them know that adults also don't always understand why things happen.
-Do your best to be supportive, loving and predictable.
-Encourage them to engage in physical play and exercise.

Pets:
-For pets: it is also important for you to stick with normal activities as much as possible. Help them to feel secure by doing what you normally do.
-Keep your pet in a secure and quiet setting, like your home.
-If you are going to walk your dog, make sure they are on a leash.
-If the unfortunate event that your pet does or has escape, check with Animal Care and
Control they can be reached by phone at 343-8122 or website www.muni.org/animal and click on lost pets for step by step guidance on how to conduct your search.
