Hello,
Like title says I live in Oklahoma. My brother married a nice girl from Iowa and they are moving there in the first of the year. After talking with him and his in-laws, and visiting several times, the wife and I am thinking that we may move too for a new start and for our son. As you may know Oklahoma is facing an education catastrophe and from what I’ve read and heard Iowa is a great place to raise a child. Education, hunting and fishing opportunities, a close friend in Des Moines due to factory closing here in Oklahoma, not liking the way Oklahoma City is becoming a big city, etc. is all playing into the thought.

Anyway, I was wondering what your gun laws are like?  My brothers f-I-l is a hunter but doesn’t know a lot about the gun laws.
1.  What is the deal on SBR?
2.  What is the deal on SBS?
3.  What is the deal on suppressor?
4.  What is the deal on full auto?
5.  What is the deal on CCW?
6.  What are Knife laws like?

Thank you for the info.

SBR/SBS - Legal

Suppressor - Legal

Full Auto - Currently not allowed but working on it

Concealed Carry - Our permit is a weapons permit allowing carry of any weapon legal in Iowa, concealed or open. Signs have no force of law. If there is a sign and you are discovered and asked to leave by a person of authority you must or face trespass charges. Training requirements in Iowa code 724. Training requirements for renewal were changed this year. No retraining required anymore. Schools and grounds, gamimg floors of casinos, post office grounds, federal property, court rooms (an area of contention) are the main areas where carry is not allowed. Seems I am forgetting something here so  I am sure someone else will correct me.

Knives have varying laws locally.

Anyway a basic breakdown. We have some very good gun laws  except for select fire weapons and employer parking lot laws (a personal area of contention).

Not to shy you away, we could REALLY use the extra votes but make sure you really check into things first and if you do move, move to the right area.

Our education system isn't exactly setting records either.

Our gun laws our getting better by the year.

We actually went RED this year so I am real happy about that.

What kind of work is your family looking to get into? We have lots of work but Iowa pay rate sucks compares to other states I have been to.

Where in Iowa would you guys be moving to? Different parts of the state are COMPLETELY different from the others from features, entertainment, job and pay differences etc etc.

The fishing here is meh at best, unless you are on one of the major lakes or rivers. The deer hunting is world class. The pheasant hunting sucks unless you are in the NW part of the state for the most part.

Give us some more info and we will try our best to help you out.

The area we would be moving to is Council Bluffs area.  My wife has job experience in home medical services and special education of mr/ed. As for me I am retired and work part time here at a gun store and range. We were blessed later in life with a fine boy so everything is about him now.

As to the laws in Iowa compared to Oklahoma it mirrors each other close except the full auto firearms. CCW sounds just like the same in both states too exc pt on property storing of firearms at places of work.

Thanks for the insight and info, will probably be asking more as we look at moving.
