Actually, THAT is permitted. Statute 2C:39-6e reads:
Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent a person keeping or carrying about his place of business, residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, any firearm, or from carrying the same, in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section, from any place of purchase to his residence or place of business, between his dwelling and his place of business, between one place of business or residence and another when moving, or between his dwelling or place of business and place where such firearms are repaired, for the purpose of repair.
Now, we've seen this exemption over-scrutinized, and people get jammed up by it - as was the case with Brian Aitken. He was charged with unlawful possession, claimed he was in the process of moving to NJ, but the judge disallowed that defense and determined that he was NOT actually in the exact process of moving because he stopped to visit with his parents during the moving process.
TECHNICALLY, if you were to transport the firearms, YOU are not in the process of moving - you're only HELPING someone ELSE who is moving. It could be argued that the exemption doesn't apply to you, since you yourself are not moving between residences.
My advice would be to have your son do all the transporting of firearms - you transport the other, far less dangerous items, such as grenades, pipe bombs, and thermonuclear devices. For the children, you see...
Incidentally... know that while the above exemption allows one to transport firearms, it does NOT extend to any hollow-point ammunition. There is no LEGAL way in NJ to transport hollow points while moving, unless you actually stop at a target range somewhere along the way. Best bet here is to ship any HP ammo by scheduling a home pickup by UPS or FedEx.
Ain't this state grand?
