Finding the ammo you need is almost impossible and if you do find it, it's priced so that people like me just can't afford it.  We have some ammo for most of our handguns and the 5.56 AR's but things being what they are, I'm extremely hesitant to shoot any of it because it's literally irreplaceable.  I'm comfortable shooting anything but .22LR.

I figured if the election went red ammo would be back quickly but now it doesn't look like it's coming back before the year is over and probably even longer.

I get that the ammo companies are making more now than they ever have but it's simply not making it to the average shooter so it doesn't really matter.  I look at every website I can think of every day, multiple times a day and night.  I've yet to see anything actually in stock.  Most of them say they won't even put an order on backorder anymore.  I'm not a conspiracy tin hat type but it's obvious that the ammo is being sold before it ever makes it to online retailers or brick and mortar store shelves.  Back during the first big ammo apocalypse the neckbeards would be camping out in front of stores and rush the shelves each day when the store opens.  That's not even happening this time around because the ammo never seems to make it to the store shelves.

As much as I love to go to the range and shoot I just can't make myself shoot up any of our already small supply knowing it's likely going to be 1 or more years before it can be replaced.  Even if it starts showing back up a year from now the current prices of almost $1 per round of fmj 9mm and often double that for rifle ammo means it's still unattainable for many shooters.  Those prices will just continue to rise as the demand rises and the supply remains nonexistent.

I'm just frustrated with it all and don't see an end anywhere in sight.

I'm shooting less, but haven't completely stopped. I've got a little bit of a backstop but not enough to make me comfortable shooting like I did.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 8:23:13 AM EDT
I have stopped. Once a month I would take my gear to south GA and shoot steel with my grandsons but I just can't as I feel like I am wasting a precious commodity.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 10:14:29 AM EDT
I slowed down quite a bit when GORP passes were no longer available.  I couldn't take small groups to the range anymore.

In the last couple of years, I've virtually stopped.  It's not due to the recent ammo situation.  My closest shooting buddies have died.  It's just not the same without them.

Still have all my stuff and even have ammo that I stockpiled before Obama was sworn in.

Just haven't gone.

I have really cut down. From 200+ rounds a week to 60 rounds a month. I will probably cut it down to every couple of months.

My fort is solid but like was said earlier I feel like I'm wasting a precious resource.

Lot's of dry fire and movement practice for the near future.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 11:50:59 AM EDT
I've switched to more rimfire shooting and reloads only for center fire.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 12:48:03 PM EDT
I shot 5 rounds of 410 #4 yesterday. May or may not have been to torment the neighbors.
In general, I've scaled down on shooting a LOT. Especially 9mm
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 1:28:32 PM EDT
With the exception of sighting in new optics I haven't been shooting. Before the shortage I was shooting 400-500 rounds a month.

I'm not the tin-foil hat type either but, it's almost like ammo production has slowed way down. Sure, there's higher demand but there is literally no ammo stock anywhere of any caliber. If ammo companies are producing it, how can there be no stock at any online or brick and mortar store? If they do have stock its gone within minutes.

This is me as well but need to get back to at least work on some pistol practice. My son and wife have both been nudging to go but with ammo being like it is I’m hesitant.

I have cut back.. I was at an indoor range the other day and they are charging $50.00 / box for target 9mm.   Ouch!!!

The funny thing is that I may shoot firearms based on my ammo stash.. I have a lot of 357Magnum and 22 LR.  So off to the range with the S&W 686 and the Ruger 10/22.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 2:14:53 PM EDT
I cut way back, really only shoot now if i need to sight in or just try out a new gun. I do shoot my .22lr bolt gun in the back yard, 50 rounds will go a while.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 2:22:18 PM EDT
I have actually started shooting more, believe it or not. No one is ever at the range I go to which is nice. I mainly shoot milsurp bolt guns which helps on ammo consumption but I still shoot about 100 rounds per week of centerfire rifle ammunition. Granted, I stacked deep when I started collecting in the early 2000's so I'm still shooting ammo that I bought almost 20 years ago.

At this point, I don't really care if/when I run out of ammo. I'm sick and fucking tired of worrying about bans and shortages. Just don't care anymore. When I finally run out of milsurp ammo and then factory ammo and then powder and primers, whatever, at least I had fun.
Link Posted: 2/4/2021 3:55:41 PM EDT
I’ve been shooting about the same, but I’ve switched over to more .22 for practice. Most of my centerfire time as of late has been helping new shooters get the most out of their equipment. So, essentially shooting their ammo/setup for 1-2 groups and then comparing to what they are doing with the same system.

I do plan on shooting more comps this year, which is where the bulk of my centerfire rounds will go.

I shot some 300blk subsonic out of my 9" SBR with a sdn-6 for a friend of mine the other day . . . maybe 10 rounds.

Shot 5 rounds of .38spl out of a uberti cattleman I just bought at the same time, probably 2 months ago at this point.

Those were the only 15 rounds of centerfire I've shot in a year and some change.

Just got my CCI quiet pack in that GD made me buy. I'd probably shoot 50-60 rounds of that stuff here one weekend with my daughter. Don't care about the quiet much since it's not supposed to cycle a 10/22 without modification, don't mind burning through that stuff.

Do you have grandkids you can take out? Maybe kids/grandkids of some if your late buddies? I'd love to take out my grandfathers friends and shoot and share stories of him over lunch/dinner somewhere.

Last 6 months I've actually stepped up my shooting.

Mainly working on drills and movement. Been thinking about getting with Rob to learn some CQC skills and urban.

I am doing a bunch of 22 pistol instead of my usual 9mm. But I bought the M&P 22 pistol for this very reason.

Grandkids live North of Atlanta, 4.5 hrs away.  Too young anyways.  Range in age from 3 yrs to one month old.  That'll come in a few years.  I'm retiring in 6 years.  Will move permanently to our place in Ellijay.  That way they'll be an hour away.

I do have friends.  My point was that it just isn't the same without my close friends.  We had many years invested together.  My four closest friends five years ago are all gone now.  The last one goes in the ground on Sunday.  Being my friend is apparently a high risk venture.

I'm good.  Life has its peaks and troughs.  I'm just coming out of a dip right now.  I have no room to complain.  I'm very blessed.

Wasn't familiar with Aim, thanks.  At this point I'd be happy just to get some decent 6.5 Grendel.  I still haven't had a chance to see what my new rifle can do and enjoy it.  Took me years to finally buy all the parts to build it and now it's just sitting in the safe looking pretty.  At least it's beautiful lol (in my opinion).

Was just out shooting today.

I still go regularly, I just shoot less rounds per trip.  Enough to keep the skills up.  There is no point in having an ammo fort if you can't hit anything if you need to.  :)

Sorry to hear about your buddies, Brownie.  A quiet range by yourself can be a good time to shoot a little and relax a lot, which is what I've been doing out there.

I'm shooting much less since moving here from Texas 1.5 years ago. I used to have a private outdoor range between work and home, that was $200 a year and unlimited guests. Falling steel, reactive targets, you name it. Everything except centerfire rifle was fair game.  I would go most weeks and sometimes 2x.

Now I'm in the suburbs and the closest range is probably 20-30 minutes away with traffic. Plus indoors single lanes, which suck. I have young kids so I can't devote 3 hours to getting out and shooting.

I have a comfortable ammo fort but I hear everyone on the resupply/price issues. I started competition shooting when bulk 9mm was 12 cents a round. I didn't buy as much as I could have last year when it was under 20 cents. But at a dollar a pop? Eh, it's just not as fun at that price.

I know someone who works the gun counter at the local Cabela's - it is literally just the neckbeards/LGS owners and friends camping out the two days a week they get in ammo. Store recently started reserving a box for each gun they have for sale. Similar stories coming in from Academy employees. Online places have said that their email notifications on OOS items cause each shipment to sell out in minutes.

This discussion has made me dust off one of my AR22's. I haven't shot it since 2013.

A few minor updates and it will a perfect practice substitute for my goto.

What a year/years.....

I saw a YT video the other day on this subject.  The guy had been chatting with a store owner who said he didn't expect to see ammo on the shelves again until at least the fall of 2021.  I'm beginning to think that's a pretty optimistic prediction.  As the left pushes their socialist and communist agenda it's just going to trigger more panic buying.  Even now we're at the point that buying even small amounts of ammo has become prohibitively expensive for many Americans.  As time goes on that disparity will get much worse and ammo will become something only available for the wealthy.

I've been trying to find decent (accurate) 6.5 Grendel ammo.  I'm on several email notification lists but haven't had a single one give me a notification.  That said, even if one notified me, the high price and box limits and long times in between scoring a box or two means I never actually get anywhere.  Welcome to the utopia created by our nation's stupidest people.

I don't' think it'll be over until next year without any influence of the Xiden administration. If they do something along the lines of banning imported ammo it'll never end.

My shooting is down about 75% in the past few months. I thankfully managed to get a good stock of .22 and 12ga before the craziness fully set in and that's all I've been shooting. I'll probably shoot a few 3-Gun matches but I'm cutting back severely on practice.

I've slowed down only because I don't like the cold. In the meantime I've loading like a madman. Just finished a run of 2k 9mm last night. Attachment Attached File

We have enough supplies to load a few hundred rounds of 9mm, .357 mag or .45 Colt but after that no more primers and I'm pretty sure we are almost out of powder.

I have not shot my center fire rifles except to sight 3 new builds in and try out my new suppressors that arrived last year. I waited 7 months for my .30 cal can and I have probably shot less than 50 rounds through it because I am conserving what little I have. The thing is, I have probably 5k worth of bullets, a bunch of powder but practically no SR or SP primers. I hope primers start to come back in bulk soon and at normal prices. I have not gotten desperate enough to where I would pay what people are privately selling them for yet. If things don’t change this year I may be desperate enough to pay the $150/1000 asking price just so I can build up my supply.

So......while this doesn't help the pricing situation.... ammoseek(dot)com is the best place to find ammo online in stock NOW.

The prices right now are clearly INSANE but I always seem to find up to date availability.

While I certainly have not been shooting NEAR as much since before the 2020 crunch began I have taken my .22's out for a spin more often.

CMMG .22 AR Conversion
Advantage Arms G19 .22 Conversion
Ruger SR22
Gabilondo Llama .22 (That I got from Ed Avila before he left NY for TX)

The most recent exception being Emu's NV Shoot where I burned through about 200rds of Tula Steel I grabbed for $.50/rd between a few trips to Academy/TruPrep, and about 100rds of FMJ 9MM from the fort.

The fun was well worth the expense.

For 223, you can use .22 casings to make a jacket. Not sure if you’re trying that. A friend of mine sent me some about 8yrs ago that he made. They grouped around 1.5moa at 100 with a random load, so definitely useable.
