First ones around us in NoVa.  Only on one tree so far.  Just shells… no singing or swarms yet.

Saw a few shells stuck to trees in the Fair Oaks area of Fsirfax on Friday.

Out in numbers this morning.  Crawling in the grass, up the trees, coming out of shells.

Thousands in my front yard where a large maple once was.  Neighborhood kids are all over collecting them in buckets.

I notice that you're in VA. But that's a pretty big place.

Mind telling us where in VA you are?

I hit one on the motorcycle on Thursday.

Have see on in the yard when I moved a big log.   Nothing coming up out of the ground or climbing up trees yet.

Nothing like 17 years ago when we were out camping and had a big rain storm that stopped about 10 PM and they all came out about midnight.   Kids had fun that night.

That was my pup a few years ago, he thought they were pop rocks until one pinched him good a few years ago.

They're all over the damn place in NoVA; I must've crunched a dozen or so walking the dog earlier today, and that was with trying to not crunch them.

Went to Wegman's and Lowes in Leesburg today. Stopped in Paeonian Springs at a vegetable stand on the way home.

Still no sight (or sound) of cicadas.

Buckets full of cicadas that have already molted.  Throw them in the air and they fly.  It’s been too cool at night for them to make a racket.

I had about a 100 on a small Japanese maple and I was throwing them in the air and birds were having a blast.  One dragonfly swooped in a grabbed on out of the air.  Didn’t know dragonflies were heavy lifters.

Just looked at my lawn and there are 100s more crawling out.  I’m the only one on the court with any.  Strange.

Just got back from a run which included Frying Pan Park.  The only evidence of cicadas is my front yard.  I must be jinxed.

Depends how long ago they ripped out the trees.  They might not have survived.  So you may not see many.   But you will still hear them.

Lucky you.  I have to sweep 100's of shells and bugs off my front porch each morning.

Do you water your lawn?

Cicadas come out after a heavy rain when the ground softens up.  I remember 17 years ago, my boys were in scouts and we were camping out.   Had thunderstorms come through Saturday night about 7-10 PM.   At midnight the cicadas started coming out.

Nope, haven’t been watering.  Cicadas were only coming out where a had an old maple removed last November.  Maybe that urged them to come out earlier than the rest.  They are finally starting to emerge from neighbors yards.

I’m 4.5 miles south of Lovettsville.  We’re practically neighbors.

I've finally heard and seen them!

Took my wife and youngest child for a walk in my old Fairfax Co. neighborhood.

Took a photo of one on a sweetgum leaf.

I wonder how they taste?

As a small kid, I was very afraid of cicadas when I first saw them in the early '80s.

I thought they were giant hornets!

I'm cool with 'em now, tho.

ETA: [email protected]!# real hornets!

My development here in Haymarket is ~16 years new so no brood around here.

Spent yesterday and today camping at Lake Fairfax w my son and his Cub Scout troop and we got to see the cicadas firsthand.  Neat.

Still not as crazy as it was in Vienna in 87.  Seemed like there were way more back then.
Link Posted: 5/23/2021 10:34:45 PM EDT
They don't taste like shrimp. My kids wanted to try them since so many people mentioned eating them. So last night we "picked" some freshly molted ones. Today we fried them. Dipped in egg and then seasoned flour. Fried in vegetable oil. I was expecting them to "pop" like a grape. They did not. In the end the boys all ate two and the girls ate one each. It wasn't nearly as awful as any of us expected. My best description at flavor would be mild ground/soil taste.

My kids have also been filling up buckets with them. Yesterday one of them had 170.
