So, who is Lt. Andrew Jackson Buttram you ask? Well Lt. AJ Buttram was the last Confederate soldier killed (April 23, 1865) east of the Mississippi. He was my wife's 3rd great grand uncle. At the time of his death he was buried were he fell in the town of Mumford, AL. This is were the problem starts. His grave is located on private property. The current owners have no interest in the grave or its preservation at all. His grave was mark with a monument at one time but has since been moved after being struck by a truck in the 70's. This monument was moved across the road leaving the actual grave unmarked.

Not only is this a momentous historical event for our nation. Munford, AL especially wants to see "Jack's" grave protected as he is a central iconic figure in their community.

The local chapter of Sons of Conferderate Veterans (Samual C Kelly Camp 454) was approached by the city requesting help to protect the grave site. The idea being to get Jack moved to a secure location were he and his monument can reside safely. Safe from utility digging, vehicle tracks and ultimately the loss of its existence. These gentlemen of the SCV Camp need funds for the military funeral & reburial taking place April 2020. They have set up a gofundme to help raise these funds .

The disinternment In February being conducted by the University of Alabama Archeolgy Department is funded by a grant.  The military funeral & reburial (scheduled for April 18th 2020) is being funded by the SCV Camp. States laws dictate how burials are to be conducted which include the expected expenses.  All of the same needs and requirements have to be meet (coffin, vault, excavation, tents, funeral home services, etc)

This is to a very rare event.  Only the third of its kind in our nation's history. Most disinternments/reburials happened shortly after the war. A considerable number of people from all over the US have committed to attend, as well as the entire Munford community.

Any history buffs and those concerned with preserving our national history may be interested in assisting these efforts.  The funeral is open to the public and all here are invited to attend.

Thank you.
